How we start the season

Postby LA_Mustang » Mon Jul 21, 2003 5:18 pm

Most Tech students don’t bother to show up for the SMU game, because it is SMU....the game wont even be competitive, right? Wrong. Bartel and Kincade each have solid efforts and the defense comes up big in the fourth quarter as SMU upsets Tech, 26-24. Stunned Tech students arrive in Lubbock that Monday to start the semester with their Red Raiders at 0-1. Riding the high of the Tech victory, SMU comes into Waco two weeks later to take on the Bears. Both teams start the game rusty but SMU grinds out a 23-16 victory. Its a great day for the SMU backfield as Kincade, Massey, and Fitzgerald combine for 200 yards and SMU has a couple of big plays on special teams.
After years of 0 for Septembers, Bennett gets our boys off to a 2-0 start, on the road in Big XII country no less. It sets up a huge battle at a sold out Ford Stadium against top 20 Okie St, who come into the game 3-0 after a big win at Nebraska to start the season. I may be dreamin, but how much fun would that be?

It would be fantastic. It is also less likely that Ben Curtis winning the British Open. It could happen but it's better than a 500-1 shot. Be happy if we win 1 of the first 4.

If Tech played SMU 100x, Tech would probably win 65-70 of them...but that is still a 30-35% chance we have to win.

We should be competitive with Baylor. And with a win over Tech, we would probably be favored.

OSU is another story, but who knows how they will overlook us at 3-0 (if they beat UNeb).

It could happen.

I'd be happy if we aren't 0-4 heading into UTEP...

If Texas Tech and Baylor were at home this year, I'd be confident that we could win one. However, Post-DP SMU is one of the worst road programs in the NCAA, and losses are probable at Texas Tech, Baylor and Nevada.

I think it is an advantage that the Tech game opens the season, because the new QB there will not have had a warm-up game so to speak. We just can't commit turnovers, which always seem to plague SMU in September road games.

Baylor coaches probably have the SMU game circled as the best chance to put on a good show for the home folks. Hence, I don't think they will overlook SMU. We definitely can win this game, but I wouldn't bet this game.

Nevada has a lot of returning players, who beat us 24-6 in Dallas at the end of last season.

Oklahoma State beat us 52-16 last year, and will be better this year. Traditionally, SMU plays well against strong teams at home (even though most are losses), and I think the team will keep the score within 3 TD.

I'd absolutely love it if SMU came out 2-2, but don't quit on the season if we start 0-4, because it is a strong possibility.

If we somehow knock off Tech, Baylor will build its season around the SMU game, because (A) we might be BU's only chance for a win and (B) they'd take a beating in recruiting if they lose to SMU after we made some noise with an upset of Tech.

Unlikely though it may be - I'll take it!

SMU has played TECH 6 times since the DP and we've lost every one. Our winning percentage against former SWC schools I believe is in the teens. I SERIOUSLY doubt we could beat Tech 30-35 times out of 100. Maybe 10-15% at best based on the current talent descrepancy.

Guys, it's not like BJ has never taken a snap for Tech before. He came in ice cold in the third quarter against Clemson and stil had no problem driving 80+ yards for a touchdown in like 2 minutes.

Attendance will be ridiculously low, but Tech by at least 17 imo.

Correct-B.J Symmons is far more experienced than Richard Bartel-he is going to be a 4 year letterman and has played considerable minutes with a completion percentage in 60+% range. Not to mention perhaps one of the best stable of receivers in College FB.

Yeah I bet ol' BJ can rare back and throw that 5 yard pass as well as Kingsbury. It may be hard for him to grasp that offense though, with all the stop, flat, and slant routes...seems pretty rough. Maybe BJ can throw that 15 yard long ball every once and awhile too...

I'm going to pretend (for your sake) that you're not making fun of our offense. You know, the offense that put 48 up on the Wrecking Crew at Kyle and finished the season averaging about 50 points a game.

I think you'd have a lot more luck mocking our Red Carpet defense. There is your key if you want to win.

The Air Raid, on the other hand...

Sorry - but until you remove all references to Mac Davis you will continue to have no credibility on this board.

Oooohh...

I guess you'll have ask someone else about our offense then. Maybe the folks at UT or Clemson could help you out.

"About 50" does not equal 38, which is what TT averaged last year. Still impressive though, 6th in the nation. Image
