MM - Glad to hear you're making the trip. I think you'll find Lubbock is a great college town, and not quite the "middle-of-nowhere" border town some people claim it is. Anyway, hope this helps.
TAILGATING: There are two main tailgating spots where people fire up the grill and count down the hours to kickoff. Jones SBC stadium is located on the corner of 4th and University - across the street (4th) is a huge parking lot where most alumns/fans tailgate. The students have their own tailgating section (RaiderGate (
http://www.raidergate.ttu.edu)) on campus. I've never been to the alumni tailgating, but RaiderGate is awesome with live music and lots of fun. The stadium just got finished with a major renovation phase, so get there early and check it out!
RESTAURANTS: There's plenty to choose from (including all the major chains on Slide Rd.), but some local favorites are
Gardskis (located on Broadway, kind of a nicer restaurant)
50 Yard Line (South Loop, best steak in town, pricy)
Jazz (19th St, good cajun food and live jazz music)
Rosas (4th St, great Mexican food)
Orlandos (Ave. Q, good Italian)
One Guy from Italy (Broadway across from Tech, good pizza, major student hangout)
Spankys (Broadway across from Tech, HUGE burgers)
NIGHTLIFE: If you're more the college-aged crowd, you definitely should check out the Depot District (
http://www.lubbockhospitality.net/Depot). This is where most Tech students hang out after the game - lots of bars, clubs, and live music almost every night. Be sure to try Hub City Brewery for burgers and home-brewed beer and Bleacher's Sports Cafe for wings. Almost all of these places have music.
If you need any more information, I'd be happy to help. Since classes don't start at Tech until the week after SMU, I don't know how good the atmosphere is going to be student-wise, but I'm sure it'll be a good time for all. Hope to see you there!
PS - North Lubbock (where Tech is) is going through a major renovation. They're building a new freeway, shopping centers, parks, apartment complexes, etc. across from campus, and right now the place looks like a war zone. Be mindful of construction crews, and pardon the mess!
