BOULDER — The night after Colorado basketball coach Ricardo Patton informed the world he won’t seek or accept a contract extension following the 2006-07 season, the phone belonging to Denver Nuggets assistant Mike Dunlap started ringing.

A distinguished list of coaches is among the rumored candidates for the CU opening, in addition to Dunlap. ESPN national basketball writer Andy Katz mentioned Gonzaga assistant Billy Grier, Minnesota coach Dan Monson and Saint Mary’s coach Randy Bennett as possibilities. Former Golden State Warriors coach Mike Montgomery, a four-time Pac-10 coach of the year at Stanford, is available after leaving the NBA team in August. Other names to watch include Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins, SMU’s Matt Doherty and Oral Roberts’ Scott Sutton.

If Doherty goes .500, we are in a perpetual long haul of him being mentioned for every opening. Now, what portion of those would he consider? I dunno.

That is stupid. Katz loves to list coaches like that. Not happening until he starts winning.

Only way this would happen is if he had problems with Orsini or the administration or he just wants to live in Colorado. From a carreer perspective, I would expect him to consider a change in 2 or 3 years, but not sooner. If we could start to fill Moody up (like in the 70s), he probably wouldn't ever want to move!

One other thing to consider would be potential recruits reaction to any move he makes. If he has a history of moving every two or three years, do you really think they are going to want to commit to play for him knowing that he might leave them high and dry at any moment. If I am an opposing coach, I would use that record against him mercilessly in recruiting!

I would not worry about Matt having any interest in the Colorado job. He is very happy in Big D and his "boss" already considers it home. He may not retire at SMU, but I believe it would take an offer from one of the top 20 or 30 programs in the country for him to even consider a move. He will be mentioned for jobs often, however I don't see one of the "Top 20" calling until he has built a program here. Even then, his strong feelings towards your school, your administration's support of him, and the Dallas community will make it difficult for anyone to lure him away.

Sit back and enjoy the renewed excitement and commitment to your BB program. Matt's knowledge of the game and his ability to recruit will elevate the Mustang program in short order.

I don't see him going to CU. They have all kinds of issues up there. SMU is a better job. The one thing CU has is the Big 12 but due to financial issues, poor attendance, and a poor recruiting base one can argue that it is a bottom of the pack job. I see Coach Doherty seeing this thing through and turning it around in pretty quick fashion. When he does leave- 4-6 years from now- it will be for a more high profile situation than CU and SMU will be left with a very healthy basketball program.

If this were a football situation I would worry due to the difference in BCS v. Non BCS. Basketball is a much more even playing field with the tournamnet set up. I think he likes Dallas a lot.

Don't forget, he left Notre Dame and FAU after one year at each. If the right offer comes along, he will listen.

Big difference between Notre Dame to UNC and FAU to SMU and SMU to Colorado. They haven't won there consistently in eons and current Big 12 is much tougher to get well in than CUSA.

Potential for SMU farrrrr out weighs CU. I mean, really, who would really say no, SMU campus and city suck, so I am not coming. The opportunities are endless with admin support.

A kid may want to play in Big 12.. better talent until proven otherwise. Boulder is a great town next to a great city.. Denver. Plus.. Boulder is a very very tight community. The Rocky Mountains have an allure to them.. even better in the summer.

Translation: there are many reasons a kid/coach would choose CU over SMU. I've lived in Dallas and Denver, and can see the attractions to both. But I must tell you.. I miss the mountains and laid-back attitude of Denver.
