Hardest job in sports?

Post by Roach »

Not to make light of the events that have taken place in Waco, but how would you like to be the Sports Information Director (PR mouthpiece for the athletic department) at Baylor this summer? You have the unbelievable Patrick Denehy tragedy, the offensive lineman who apparently overheated during a workout and is feared to be suffering kidney/organ damage/failure, and now comes the story that Denehy's dad quoted his son as saying a Baylor coach offered to "take care of" his tuition and living expenses for a year.

Too bad athletic department personnel aren't paid hourly - you know these guys are putting in some hellacious overtime in Waco.

No kidding. Putting a positive spin on the football team's performance this fall will seem like a cakewalk next to this.

I work in media relations for a major metropolitan police department. The folks at Baylor definitely have their work cut out for them. However, they're doing the right thing on the Dennehy case by referring ALL media inquiries to law enforcement officials. It's an 'ongoing investigation' and to discuss it could jeopardize the case.

Even without the Dennehy tradgedy, the alleged improprieties in the hoops department, AND the overheating, the PR job is still an unenviable task.
Because the Baylor athletic program sucks. Aside from baseball and like, women's hoops, I think.

Well, that's true, but the success of the various teams is meaningless compared to the Denehy case (and to a lesser degree, the allegations being made about improprieties by the basketball coaching staff.)

Obviously.
I wasn't making light of the murder, either.
It just has to be an awful job on a Saturday night compiling stuff like:

"Despite the 70-0 loss to California, three Baylor Bears established career highs in tackles.
Sophomore reserve strong safety Montrelle Wilkins recorded 2.5 tackles, marking a new best in his young and promising career."

I think the hardest job in sports is to be football coach at Tulsa.
