Actually, I don't think we have players designated to be our scorers this year. From what I saw from the scrimmage and the exhibition game, our offense is set up to be inside out. Most of our outside shots came with less than 10 seconds on the shot clock and they were open looks by whoever was open. When the guys operate it, it is a very clean and efficient offense. If we get better at blocking out and aggressively going for rebounds as well as spotting the open guys down low quickly, we might have something to cheer about come late January/February.
I went too.
From my perspective, the positives were hustle, ball awareness, and Spencer's play. The negatives: we weren't aggressive inside. Too many shots blocked by a largely unathletic opponent. Subs don't seem ready to contribute as much as they will have to with our short bench. Too many turnovers. Too many steals given up. Reliance on very poor shooting by our opponents to keep ahead. If HBU had shot around 45% (instead of 26%) they would have been within a few points of us.
Cameron SpencerI must apologize to Coach Doh. I saw videos of two of Spencer's
high school games, and I saw him warm up and play very briefly in the Global Games. To be frank - I thought he was a stiff with little motivation, few skills, and a poor attitude. Friday night he made me a liar. He was 5 for 5 from the field, he had 4 or 5 boards and blocked two shots. I thought most of his passes and court awareness were good and he used his size well on defense. He gives us some help at the 4 or 5. He still has a long way to go, but I did see enough potential to justy Doh's signing him. Many of you mentioned Roberts - I believe Doh is trying to make him play within the system. Also I think he may only be at about 75% with some nagging health problem. If he gets well I think he will be fine. Pearson has always been one of my favorite players but I want to see better shot selection from him and want him getting lots of junk points around the basket. He is an animal on the boards. Rack's injury was worrisome. I still haven't heard if he is OK but my guess is that it was just a painful kneecap bump on the floor and that he will be OK. He was walking on the leg and didn't seem to leave the floor for x-rays or treatment.
