Someone else can do a better job on the 7-11 reference than I can, but I know that it boils down to a derogatory DMN article when UH first joined thad SWC and promptly won its way into the Cotton Bowl 3 out of the first 4 years. The article stated something to the effect that Cotton Bowl officials and Dallas officials did not want Houston to be the SWCs representative in the Cotton Bowl because the economic impact would be greater from other schools. A statement said the Houston fans would all eat at the 7-11.
I will extrapolate on that, along with the article was the current head of the Cotton Bowl, I forget his name but I think "Hoss" was mixed in there somewhere. Anyways he referred to us a cockroaches and that when we came up to the cotton bowl half of us would be eating at the 7-11 the other half would be robbing them.
Hoss Brock was the President of the Cotton Bowl but I think it actually was an unattributed member of the Selection Committee who actually made the immortal comment. Hoss Brock was the ultimate kiss-ass.
FYI: The first convenience store in the world was born at Twelfth St. and Edgefield Ave. in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas in 1927 when John J. "Uncle Johnny" Green began stocking bread, milk, eggs, and a few other essentials at his ice dock operation. The ice dock was one of several owned by the Southland Ice Company - later the Southland Corporation - which eventually developed and promoted the "7-11" convenience store chain.
