Rice has a better conference record-the only reason they aren't already bowl eligible is a non-conference schedule of UT, UCLA, Florida St. and Army in comparison to Texas Tech, Arkansas Tech, Sam Houston State Monument and North Texas Teachers College. I think Rice can legitimately claim that they had the more successful season to date.

We couldn't even beat NT, won two scrimmage games that count in our W-L record. Don't kid yourself, Rice has had a much better season playing real Div I teams.

Yes we have the same record but the two do not compare.....
We played UNT (which we lost), Ark State, and Sam Houston State, Rice played at UCLA, a #8 ranked Texas, and a #18 Florida State......

EDIT: guess everyone else already cleared that up....

I never said they couldnt...but "to date" is not the season...

If we can go out and beat Tulsa in regulation (something that took Rice 2 OTs to do) and then beat Rice in Houston you cant say that they had a better season than SMU

Using your logic then Stanford must be awesome with all the Pac-10 teams, Notre Dame, and Navy. Rice has gotten better yes, but to say their season has been a success because they played lost to harder teams in out of conference is a joke.

I don't understand how you can't look at Rice's 5-5 record and not go...wow.

If they had not gone out and played UT, FSU and UCLA...would they be bowl eligible?

They have had a successful season...and they still have 2 games left.

And the only games they were actually competitive in their OOC schedule were UCLA and Army (who isn't very impressive). We could have played UT (they wanted to schedule us) and maybe some other big name team to eat us for breakfast. I wouldn't be too excited about losing 52-7 and 55-7 to UT and a worse than normal FSU team.

UCF is awful, UTEP we should have won (even missing Willis, Rogers, and Muse), we haven't played Tulsa yet (but I will admit that is a good win for them), and we beat ourselves against Houston.

Now if you want to put Rice on a pedestal and exalt them as the national champions, go right ahead. They are still on the same level as us, regardless of their OOC schedule.

I am not insulting Rice. I think Rice seems to have made vast strides since last year, but some of you guys need a reality check.

The UNT game was a disaster and we should not have lost that one. UTEP was sort of a mini DP...i.e., we did it to ourselves. I'm pretty sure suspending Willis was not PB's idea...there is no doubt in my mind that with Willis in that game, we win and we would already be at six wins. The team is certainly at that level of competitive play now...but the win-loss record does not do them justice.

But guess what? We DID NOT make the play. Kolb made a BETTER play. UH proceeds to go 99 yards for a TD-gets the ball back on an SMU fumble and goes what about another 70 yards for a TD. While you guys were busy complaing about the last play UH racked up about 160 yards and 14 points while walking away with the game. Again, SMU did not lose the game on that play-hell we were still wining-hell we had over 70 yards to defend the lead-Boo Hoo! -only LOSERS talk like that. LOSERS who don't get off their [deleted] and overcome adversity.

I think there is a difference between saying SMU makes that play and it is "ballgame" and saying that play cost SMU the game. The only thing I saw that cost SMU the game was spotting them 14 points.

I'm trying to understand what part of ponydawg's post you don't understand. Let me give it a try. We had 3 non conference cream puffs on our schedule and lost badly to 1. Rice had 3 impossible to win non conference games and lost all three yet we both have 5-5 records. If you simply substitute our wins against SHS and ArkState for losses against Texas and Florida State we are looking at 3-7.
