Also need to keep in mind that Tom Izzo-disciple Brian Gregory, the Dayton coach, is recognized as one of the up-and-comers in the biz. IMO he will be at a big-time conference withing 3-5 years. He's 56-37 at Dayton and the record would have been even better save the injury rash they had last year.
With the Mich St background, you can count on facing a good rebounding teams--MSU is always great in that area. They do a special rebounding drill (sort of like bball would be played in "The Road Warrior") called "War"
Hey now that the stangs have a former MSU asst on staff, the practices can do "war" also. But now I have that song spinning in my mind

My guess is that there was probably between 1600 - 1800 people there last night. I did like the student section though. It was rowdy, fairly loud, and the kids were getting into it. Now if only the folks in the blue plastic seats would show up...............
Seriously, until the folks in the expensive seats start showing up, I wish Orsini at halftime would pull a Cuban and invite anyone wearing something that says SMU to come sit in those vacant seats.

yes, students showed up and got excited. good to see. the alums are lame - i fully agree that they should let everyone get close to the action and let them come down after the half at least

I was at the game last night and I have to say that I was impressed by SMU's effort on both the defensive side and believe it or not the offensive side. It seemed that everytime Dayton tried to run with the ball, we got back in position on defense. One thing is for sure that this team will not be out hustled! Each time we were on offense, the team made the effort to pass the ball around and work for the best shot. The shots weren't falling like we wanted them to, but that will come. As far as the crowd goes, winning will take care of that. When I was a freshman at SMU back in 1993, we won the SWC and Moody was packed for the Rice game that year.
Go Ponies and Go Coach Doherty!

I think the honeymoon period is irrelivant here because Doherty is winning to start the season. Now if we lose that game yesterday and people were still all smiles, then yes I would say we are seeing the honeymoon in full swing. I don't think it matters at this point whether its a new coach or not, everyone is happy with W's. I hope they keep coming.

3-1 with average wins over Ill State, McNeese and Dayton is winning? Dement did that in his sleep too. Maybe we can get him back if Doherty ever bolts. seriously, lets not get carried away. Dohertys recruiting class is much more positive than than any real changes on the court last night. free throw shooting, field goal % and rebounding about the same as ever last night. defense and hustle better be on display in the first home game of the year under a new coach. believe it or not they hustled for tubbs in the same situation too.
Doherty's upcoming test is TCU. very fair and winnable game on the road against a rival SMU beat em last year in an ugly game much like last nights. tcu is a must win if Doherty is really superior in X and Os and game coaching. i am not saying thats all he has to do, but that is where he has to start if he is the real deal.

i'm not getting carried away...just impressed with road wins which we haven't been able to accomplish too often in previous years under Dement or Tubbs..no matter who the opponent.
Last night was an ugly game, no doubt - but there were a lot of shots that were in and out. However ugly it was, they are trying to find the open man and work it around more.
Can't see improvements for Ike and Killen? Not sure what you are watching.... Those kids weren't doing any of those things last year..
We all know you are sour about Tubbs, it's over now...

I am very impressed with what Coach D has done, but this team has to learn to score more than in the 50's. Soon we will find teams that score 60 or more and that is when tough times will set in. Hopefully that Paul guy won't find 4 friends that can score 60 because I will be embarassed if he and his guys beat us.

TCU had to go into double overtime to beat UTA. I think that tells us a little about where their program is.
The only other game I see us losing in non-conference is Oklahoma.

Those technically weren't road wins as the site was neutral. We did lose to FSU and I would call that a road game, albeit we gave a good showing. I still don't have high expectations for the team this year, but I still hope they win every time out and I will be rooting for them...Doherty was a great hire.
13-2 is very possible considering the caliber of teams we will be playing. The TCU game will be a good measuring stick if for no other reason than they are our rival and it will be a road game.

Yes, Hooper, 3-1 is winning. Wins are posted first, losses second..........
Seriously, let's enjoy what is going on with the program. We may wind up sucking this year but a foundation is being established. I have heard from a couple of the players that the amount of preparation and detail from Doherty and his coaches is night and day from last year. That's not a shot at Tubbs, just that I believe in time, Doherty is going to put a program in place that is going to deliver. So come on over and sit with the rest of us.

Yes, I would say that is winning. Maybe Dement could start out 3-1 in his sleep but the fact remains we are 3-1 and our only loss is to Florida State, a possible NCAA Tourney team. Last year this team layed an egg on the road vs Louisiana Monroe in the second game of the season and so far this season we are beating the teams we should, which is great news. Now we need to continue this trend by beating Monroe this Wednesday at Moody and keep marching through our OOC schedule.
