The Froggies are a Funny Bunch

Postby bagice » Tue Nov 21, 2006 12:54 pm

Looks like the tide has shifted among the frog faithful on their bowl choices. Facing the possibility of playing in the first Bowl game of the season against a 7-5 MAC or Sunbelt team has warmed them up to the idea of staying at home and playing either SMU or Rice in the FW Bowl :P .

Good reading:

It would definitely be a good crowd for sure!!!
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

I think I'll root for TCU making it into the Poinsettia Bowl, playing a no-name MAC or Sunbelt school, spending a hell of a lot of money, possibly losing out of a lack of inspiration a la SC against TCU in the Sun Bowl a few years back, and SMU meanwhile going into the Armed Forces Bowl as the de facto home team against one of the true evildoers--the WAC-16-to-MWC defectors.

I gave them a slight jab, especially since they took a shot at us.

I just read it. Waiting for their response. I really didn't realize how arrogant those guys are. Unbelieveable.

heh, this is an interesting point...I think we have a win-win situation....either us (or Rice, don't wan't to woof us with over confidence) will get to play either TCU or Utah in the FW bowl. Either opponent would have many positives. Sure, it would be great to play TCU for the skillet in a bowl, but playing a big name team like Utah would be good plus the added advantage of knowing the froggies are out in San Diego playing a Sunbelt team on a Tuesday night when no one even realizes Bowl season has started :P

We come out happy either way!

Exactly. And we have a score to settle with Utah that's far bigger than our beef with TCU.

Wait what score do we have to settle with Utah?

Second, would the skillet really be on the line in a bowl game? That usually isn't the case with rivalry trophies.

The score to settle with Utah concerns the breakup of the 16 team WAC when the Goat States decided they didn't want to be associated with us and formed the MWC. Utah and BYU led that charge.

While I don't know for sure, I would imagine the skillet would be on the line since SMU and TCU are playing. If we lost, I would rather hand it over to them and get it back next year than try and hold onto it on a "technicality". Winner take all, I say, including the Skillet!

bagice brings up a good point. Much like boxing (or dare I say wrestling entertainment), one has to consider whether this would be a true "title defense bout" (the title being the holder of the Iron Skillet).

I agree. Stay home and play in the AF Bowl. There is no benefit to playing in San Diego, and it's an awful choice, unless it's against a BCS school.

The MWC must do something about the lousy bowl tie-in situation. If TCU ends its season 10-2, it is a slap in the face to reward them with an a non-BCS lousy opponent that's 7-5 or 6-6. That is ridiculous. And SMU? Their program is a joke. They've done nothing to earn a bowl game invite anywhere. The teams in their conference are horrible, and so are they.

From that thread, we can see the frogs still have their haters over there.

Man, you give me so much crap for coming over here to attempt to have an intelligent/fun discussion about SMU/TCU/etc. and you go over to our board and tell us our schedule, conference and bowls suck. That's exactly why the majority of TCU fans that visit this board are going to have a bad attitude. I'm sure you don't care because you hate TCU and everybody that went there, etc., etc....

I normally refrain from the flame wars and actually like TCU and have defended them on these boards many a time,

but I can certainly enjoy the irony of either SMU or Rice going to the Ft. Worth Bowl to play either TCU or Utah, both very good teams and perfect for a bowl game.

Compare that to TCU who has to choose playing either SMU or Rice at your own stadium or playing the first bowl game of the season against a runner up in either the Sunbelt or MAC. Both choices suck if you are a TCU fan.....and TCU has themselves to blame for it, sure you can play against some bigger crowds and go new places, but no one cares about the teams in the Mountain West Time zone, other than the people living there and you will always have the West Coast and East Coast bias against you. IF you would have stayed in C-USA you would have had many more options and the Liberty Bowl for first and GMAC bowl for second is much better than anything in the MWC.
