Who is your favorite mustang of all time?

I never saw the guy play. I must have been 3 or 4 years old when he left SMU.

But he sat next to me in a class my freshman year. And he was in a religion class I took my sophomore year.

Anyway one day I started talking to him about football and class related stuff and learned that he played during our glory days in the 80's ....He told me he didn't complete his degree when his eligibility was used up, and he came back to complete his degree and I believe he got his diploma my sophomore year.

Super nice dude. I wish him well in what ever he's doing right now.

Football: Gary Hammond. Four year starter at FOUR different positions, including QB.

Basketball: Kato Armstrong. I remember the SWC Championship game playing Baylor where the guy behind me kept yelling "Shake and Bake Kato." Armstrong torched the Bears for the crown.

Soccer: Daniel Hernandez. That guy could kick a soccer/football.

Not to be picky, but Gary was a 3 year starter at 3 positions. Freshmen were not eligible in our day. He was all conference receiver, all conference running back and all conference athlete the year he played QB. One of the best all around athletes to play at SMU.

Doak was no. 1.
But, Levias was playing when I transferred to SMU. I have never seen one player so important to a season--1966 and the conference championship. I also never witnessed so many close games with SMU winning in the final minutes. Never forget, I beleive it was the Rice game, where SMU was behind, a bunch of us watching a movie on one of the local channels and every minute or so they would provide an update of the score at the bottom of the screen, we all went crazy when SMU won the game!
Made me an SMU fan ever since...

My favorite is not a player but a man who contributed more to the success of SMU athletics than most of the individuals mentioned on this thread....the infamous Jim Copeland. His enthusiasm and tireless work took SMU to heights it never dreamed about before his tenure. Way to go Jim.

Jim is hardly the cause of our challenges. Despite some poor coaching choices, he helped Ford Stadium become a reality and worked hard to get us into a better conference, when we didn't have the influence to control our own destiny.

Pick former Governor Clements for someone who greased our slide into oblivion, along with the other short sighted idiots, who chose to ignore the facts and live dangerously.

Now, the question is who is our favorite Mustang? Great thread.
