Title 9 is a joke. While I was at SMU they were literally passing out scholarships to any girl that would sign up. We now have the ever so popular rowing, horse jumping, and archery. And we had to cancel our All-American Men's Track Team. I remember one day when the women's horse jumping team complaind about the music being played in the weightroom. She said it was too vulgar for her girls. My question is, why do they need to work out anyway? The horse does all the work. This school needs to make a serious commitment to sports, real sports. SMU does not even have a training table. We had to eat the same thing as 115lbs. sorority girls. Ridiculous. Sorry about the rant.....not really. Go Stangs.

Very good point. I never understood why there wasn't more of an uproar over the cutting of the Men's Track team. Seriously, we cut a sport that finished in the Top 4 in the nation, the freaking Nation, the last season whe had the team. Oddly enough, since then, we resurfaced the track. We also have one of the most respected coaches in the world on our staff (Dave Wollman) who could recruit a new team and within three years be back at that level.

Matt was a hell of a thrower and had to transfer to Colorado St.

Don't even get me started on Cross-Country/Track & Field. That was the dumbest decision SMU has ever made. Track & Field was by far SMU's most successful athletics program. It was a perennial top 10 team. The track team won 3 national championships, consitently brought in national trophies ie 3rd in NCAA. How a school in Texas can go without Football, Track, and Baseball is beyond me. Not having more than one of those three is seriously wrong!

If SMU were to revive its men's track program, it would suffer the same fate as its football team.

Sad but true...when you end a great program it is hard to pick it back up and start at the top ... gotta work your way up the charts...

I disagree. Coach Wollman is one of the top throwing coaches in the world. He has a history of excellence in his field and consistently brought in world-class athletes from all over the world. He still has all of his recruiting contacts and many many recent examples of successful athletes at SMU. Additionally since he is still coaching the women's team, he continues to recruit and have contacts throughout the world. It may take a few years to get back to full strength in terms of recruiting nationally in the U.S. and being a player for the national championship, but I am willing to bet that he could make us a top 25 program withing 2 years. Coach Wollman would simply need to bring in a successful speed and distance coach to resurrect the cross-country team and attract talent in sprints. Having track and field would also help our recruiting in FB -- remember that Kevin Garrett was recruited by Washington and other BCS schools, but chose SMU in part because of T&F.

...and as many people on this board have pointed out over the years, SMU has never had a 'great' football program. There have only been little 'sparks' of greatness. :(

National prominence in T&F does not require 25 very good athletes, it takes about 5 superb athletes to get it done. I don't think that is too much of a reach for Coach Wollman.

I would expect a top 25 finish sooner than a conference championship in T&F. Simply the nature of the beast.

It would not be that hard to recruit great athletes if they brought back the program. One, most of these guys are coming from over seas and our looking for a great education. Two, track is not so much a team sport as is football. They dont have to look at what the team has done before. All they need is a good coach to hone their skills through college as the prepare for the olympics. The team as a whole becomes better as the individuals get better.
