So ex players hate Bennett. Well that concerns me, but after all you guys would have unrealistic goals about this program. Rice will be fighting a resurgent UTEP, a solid Tulsa team, UH, a Tulane team that could easily improve next year and us for a bowl game. I don't like their chances for a repeat, but that's just me. That doesn't even include the sleeping monsters lurking in the east division. Memphis will be back, USM looks better than they started, East Carolina seems to be on a roll and UAB plays decent sometimes. That's just the near future. And all they're playing for is toilet bowls right now. It's sad that our best team plays an SEC scrub in a bowl.

Realistically, I think PB is all we have to hope for. Who the H is Todd Graham???? and other than his lucky one season wonder why does anyone think he's better than Bennett??? Different school, different situation. Their D line looked much bigger than our O line. Besides, we do not have luck in football. We've only won when we cheated. As shown by OU this year it looks as if cheating to win may still be the norm in College Football and PB doesn't do that. Only rich a-holes could root against a man like Bennett....maybe that's it. This is a class struggle. Well screw you guys. I'll just root for a state school if you're going to be like that.

Didn't realize you were his keeper JT.

The point is ex-players/athletes usually have a better grasp on topics pertaining to the their perspective sports. It was a simple question. Has he played football for SMU? He claims he "was" friends with Craig James. Did he play with him? Are they fishing buddies? Player to player relationships are different than outside the team.

I did not play for SMU, so I can not comment on what players and ex-players think. I really believe none of us non-players will really be an "expert" or understand the plight of the Division 1 athelete (especially SMU football).

I respect Stallion's insight and knowledge of the game, the NCAA, and recruiting. I have a hard time with people telling us how it is when they have never been through it as a player.

All of this is worthless when you don't know if he played or not.

On topic, I don't think James cheered for Rice over SMU. I'm glad we have an alum who cares enough to point out our faults. We have a national voice who will not spread sugar and sunshine. You won't get better when no one recognizes the problem. Especially when no one cares outside of our small alumni base.

smupony is right. We are lucky to have a national voice that is objective. The alternative would be something like Bill Walton. How many times to you hear Bill Walton brag about UCLA on a national broadcast? Everyone who didn't go to UCLA gets sick of hearing about how great UCLA was/is.

James gives credibility to our program by being honest. I think a lot of you forgot that Craig James gave a stirring speech following President Turner announcing that SMU joined Conference USA. In that speech, James was very positive, upbeat, and excited at what Conference USA could do for SMU.

Is Craig James not a former SMU athlete and the last White Running Back to run for 1,000 yards in the NFL. How come his opinions about football and the SMU program are not respected on this board. Some of you SMU fans should be ashamed of yourself for letting this Craig James/Eric Dickerson bashing get out of hand. Just a loyal SMU fan that ain't going to put up with the cheap shots at Craig James.

Amen brother! You tell 'em Stallion.

Any angst that James and Dickerson have had with SMU in the past has to do with the difference in culture of the board of trustees and the Athletic Director's office pre-Death Penalty and post -Death Penalty. Think about it, the administrators, board of trustees, and AD that James and Dickerson knew on a first name basis the day the left campus in the spring of 1983 were not the there after 1987. James and Dickerson probably had a hard time connecting with the culture change. Dr. Turner has always had a good rapport with James. Orsini is the first AD in the post-DP era with guts and bravado to say, "We aim to be a top 25 program in football" You can't say that about Copeland Copeland. Trust me, James and Dickerson like the direction we are headed.

Nobody is anybody's keeper. I just think it's about the dumbest damn argument inthe world that if you did not play a sport you cannot have a valid opinion about it. You seemed to be suggesting that about Stallion and I just called you on it, that's all.

Why do you always bring up the color of CJ's skin? (And why do you capitalize "White"?) If you thought he was a great player, great. If he was your friend, great. If you think he's an insightful analyst, great. But the fact that he's white means absolutely nothing in any of those regards. If a player can play, why do you care so much about his race?

It's not race for the sake of race. I think its because of all the players in the NFL who have rushed for 1000 yards, none of them have been caucasian since Craig James. Not much way to describe that without referring to race, is there?
