Our D1 Transfers

Postby RGV Pony » Tue Dec 05, 2006 3:24 pm

Does anyone have any idea of the capabilities of the guys listed below? Those that have seen practices and/or talked w/ players? I know we often bark about our desire for 1A transfers, but if some of these pan out we could be in good shape...especially at FS.

KJ Ellis...good size for a safety...if he starts, put Hudman at SS, and we're set

Pete Fleps...not necessarily a 'transfer,' but he wasn't here before...depth at LB?

Dan Garcy...LB transfer from UofA? I don't remember the numbers on this guy

Chase Kennemer...another LB, from a&m

so, to reiterate...can any of these guys play? Any insight?

K.J. Ellis should be considered a definite Division 1A player. He gray shirted at Tech but had other Division 1A offers several of which apparently fell through(including an SMU offer) late in the recruiting season. He may have held out too long for a BCS offer w/o tieing down a backup. Eventually he was given a scholarship at Tech post signing date. Garcy was a walk-on at Arizona but I believe was an invited walkon which means that he was one of about 10-15 non-scholarship players who got to report to the start of Fall drills and not the first day of Class. A lot of Aggies thought Kennemer a walkon acould have helped the Aggies somewhere sometime. I believe he had Aggie ties and may have turned down some Division 1A opportunities to walkon at A&M. I believe he was District MVP in a tough mid-cities District at Arlington Lamar. Wouldn't be surprised if he could help our very seriously thin LB corp depth. None of these guys compare visibilty wise with any of the Top 15-20 Division 1A Transfers who went to UH, TCU, UTEP or Tulsa but I wouldn't be surprised if all three didn't contribute in some way at SMU.

Fleps went to Navy, even though we made a hard and late push for him. He left during the summer/early fall of 2005 because it just wasn't for him.

He was an outstanding OLB at Carroll and has pretty good lateral movement. He is very physical. To what extent he helps the LBs is unknown. I would think if he has a good spring, he would figure into the rotation.

I've tried digging up more on Garcy but there just doesn't seem to be that much-wonder if he was hurt as a Senior or something. The most positive thing I could say about him-other than that he was invited walkon att a BCS school is that he appears to be unusually strong. Finished tied for 4th at a West Coast Nike Camp with 31 repetitions against what appears to be all other players invited to that camp which was approximately 250. The link to the entire list was broken so I'm not entirely sure but 31 reps is usually pretty high. Don't ask-I'm not sure how much they were lifting. Drawbacks were size at 6-0 and speed 4.9 and because I the link was broken I couldn't compare him to other LBs running that day for context.

Ellis and Fleps, from what the coaching staff stated during the season WILL be fighting for starting positions. Actually it will be their job to loose. Ellis at safety, (big fast, hard hitting) and Fleps at WLB, moving Wilton McCray to safety, and possibly Ellis to corner. Sounds crazy, but what we need and what we will have is a damn good D, with week to week competition. GOOOOD!!! Now Kennemer is a good kid with a good body, but is an unknown, as well as Garcy, but who knows. We have so many defensive personell coming back that played this year, it is unknown but the competition is wide open.

Kennemer seems like more than your average walkon. For example he made the buffon's All American Team(Max Emfinger). Emfinger says at the practices for that game Kennemer ran an outstanding 4.5 for a LB. Rivals and A&M had him at about 6-1, 214-others who appear to know him say he is a tad under 6-0. Take this with a grain of salt because this might be his DAD-but there was a lot of noise about Kennemer as a walkon at A&M and one poster claims that he had offers from SMU and Iowa St. and that TCU and Utah said they would offer if he visited. Scout does confirm a late recruiting season visit scheduled to Iowa St. On the A&M board they say he decided too walkon at A&M because his step-Dad was an Aggie but could have been on scholarship elsewhere. If he really runs the confirmed 4.5 I bet he can help this team somewhere.

Stallion,

All those things you say about Kennemer are true. He did have written offers from SMU and ISU. He was told he would be offered if he went on visits to TCU and Utah. He wanted to try to play at A&M - his brother goes there and his step-dad went there. Things didn't work out there because the coach who brought him in (Torbush) left. I would say he's and easy 6'0" now and he weighs about 225, though he was up to 235 before the season practices started.
He was the district defensive MVP at Arlington Lamar, and I think he averaged 135 tackles a year each of his two years on varsity. He has been clocked at a 4.5, but his real strength is his quickness...I saw him at the A&M footbal camp, and he blew them away with his shuttle run.

He will help you guys at linebacker baring an injury. I can't wait to hear how he performs this Spring.

Ask current members of the O-Line how he performed on scout team this year.
