A couple of years ago in the stands of Ford Stadium, some guys and I were talking about coaching candidates if and when SMU ever needed to make a hire. I tossed out Randy Shannon, whom nobody had ever heard of. Shannon is a guy that is generally considered one fo the best DC's in the business and a heck of a recruiter; he interviewed a couple times for different jobs but nobody ever seemed willing to give him a chance. Shannon as DC worked for Coker, the former OC of Miami. I like offensive coordinators that work for head coaches with defense backgrounds and defensive coordinators that work for head coaches with backgrounds in offense. I don't like a coordinator that is doing his job under a coach that is telling him how to do his job.
Shannon, I haven't seen it mentioned, was a late draft pick by Jimmy Johnson in 1989 for the Cowboys and started a few games. He also was an assistant for the Dolphins. I aways thought that if he were at SMU, he would scare the cr@p out of every other school in Texas that had to recruit against him. I never thought he'd get $1M+ per year for his first job, though. And frankly, I am not sure it is a great fit. Miami has deeper problems than just wins and losses.
