less than inspiring-Tulane needed a young guy (a Todd Graham type) to motivate the alumni, sell the program and outrecruit the competition and they got a retread X's and O's guy who should be a career offensive coordinator. I have never understood the fascination with hiring guys that should be career coordinators. Too many people overlook the leadership, motivation and brand labeling qualities needed in a head coach. See Matt Doherty as well as Graham too. Then you go hire the best coordinator types to handle the X's and O's. The Head Coaching Job is much more about management.

I'm not sure about that. He did very well at UCLA and took that program farther than Dorrell has done to date.

Besides, how can you not like a coach who beats UT in Austin 66-3?

That's true - that alone makes him pretty admirable!
All reports suggest he's a pretty darn good recruiter, too.

He was an amazing recruiter at UCLA, had many top ten classes and one class that was ranked number one. He was the first choice for the OU job ahead of Stoops and for the Browns job ahead of Butch Davis. Lost control of the program at UCLA but one of the top offensive play callers in the college game IMHO. Has ties to recruiting Texas from his days at UCLA and A&M.

I don't believe that UCLA ever had those classes you are talking about during his tenure certainly not anywhere close to the No. 1 Class in America. Now once Toledo left Karl Dorrell had a great class-that how he got the job.. They also had one of the Top Recruiters in the Country in Eric Bienamy. Toledo came in with two very good seasons and then was a .500 Coach for the following 4 years. Meanwhile Pete Carrell was taking UCLA to the woodshed in recruiting.

Carroll didn't arrive until Jan. of 2001. He was a late hire and USC's class of 2001 had as many hits as misses. He really got the ball rolling with recruiting in 2002.

Believe it...Toledo had the top ranked recruiting class in his third season at UCLA (UCLA Magazine), and had the #9 Class in 2002 (Rivals.com).

Well, in 1998 he has what many people thought was the number one class in the nation. Guys like DeShaun Foster, Robert Thomas, Cory Paus were in that class. In 1999 His class was ranked fourth.....even when the wheels where coming off in 2002....which is when carroll took over SC, he was still doing good. His 02 class had 3 Five stars (Marcedes Lewis was one of them), 13 four stars (Drew Olsen, Matt Moore) and 5 Three stars. During the late 90s he and UCLA where kicking SC [deleted] in recruiting....SC had Paul Hackett then, was playing .500 ball and losing to TCU...it was during this time that UCLA won 8 straight over SC. When Carroll took over,....well, the rest is history.

And Karl Dorrel did not get the job because he was a great recruiter...he got the job because as a former player he had support of most of the Alumni, they could afford him, and had an impeccable reputation. He was just a decent recruiter at Washington and Colorado. He has zero personality. You are correct in that when he hired Eric "Public" Bienemy, he probably had one of the best recruiters in college football on his staff. But when Dorrell took over, SC was already rolling. Their classes were much better under Toledo.

Bottom line, Tulane made a great hire and they will be Conference USA contenders within the next two years.

I think the parity of the teams suggest would they have won early, they'd have been more motivated. Just IMHO. I think Tulane is competitive, but it's in fits or starts.
