that team proved it was not NCAA worthy in the first round of the NIT by getting drubbed by SW Missouri St.
We did have the cheerleader sex scandal going on at the time though that really hurt us in the WAC tourney and the NIT game, I know that was really hanging over the coaches and players about it getting out in the public and if anyone was going to be arrested.
We beat SW Missouri earlier in the year on their home court and could have beaten them again, but losing 3 in a row and the scandal really took it out of the team. Womack + Wishbone = Heisman

Were we not projected as an NCAA team the season after going to the NIT? I thought we were pre-season top 25
We were ranked 21 I believe, (somewhere in the 20's) in the DMN pre-season poll. We were getting votes in the major polls, but I don't believe we were ranked in any of them. That was 2000-2001 with Sasser, Davis, Hancock and Q. That was a fun season, albeit frustrating. I remember some decent crowds and the student section always seemed to be full because when I left the student area to relieve myself they would never let me back in.

2000/01 we were projected by Athlon among others to make it to the second round of the NCAA tournament. We were preseason top 25 by some experts and started off on a role but then went on a tailspin late in conference play. I still remember posts in the other board that was shut down and now is owned by a national company and just about everyone was so disgusted that an NIT bid was considered unacceptable and no one cared that we didn't even make the NIT based on the expectations for that team. What a disappointment that season was. Too bad Coach Doherty didn't lead that team. Now that would have been something. Sasser, Davis, Hancock, Q, Dewayne Floyd, Jibran Kelley, etc. Fun team to watch nonetheless.
They just needed some discipline, which Dement wasn't able to provide. Sasser could do whatever he pleased. That corkscrew did go in quite a few times though. If it was the same year, they showed they could hang with some good teams. I think they hung with Tenn. that year - when we should have beaten them on the road, up by 10 or 15 pts I believe. The games against Fresno were fun - Courtney Alexander, etc.
Dement's team slid at the end of every year for some reason and the West coast trips killed us. Losing to San Jose St almost ever year was a joke.
