And I'd be a liar if I said otherwise, too.

But that is not the point. The point is a man got fired for stated reasons of violations beyond those written in the paper and if that's the truth we as fans have a right to know what they were.

And if you are right that nothing will come out publically, then that is even more gutless than lying about it in the first place. Well, maybe they are #1 and #1a on the gutless list.

I have to disagree with you here. I am not sure on the rules of disclosure and so forth but I sure as hell would not want to release a statement about further violations if I did not have too, especially if we are getting no sanctions.

No point in offering up ugliness if you do not have to. Outside of a very few people connected to SMU and the fan base, no one even remembers about this or cares, nothing good would come from having to release it if we did not have to.

You want to know why I think Tubbs was fired? Based on discussions I've had with people close to the program and my own personal observations, my opinion is he was incompetent. He ran the program like he was back at Kimball High. There was no organization, no accountability. He's a great guy and a good ball coach, but completely lost when it comes to paperwork, organization and the monitoring of the program. There's a reason college basketball coaches are control freaks: they have to be on top of everything.

But the SMU administration can't come out and say that Tubbs couldn't handle the job. Well, they could, but then they would face a firestorm of criticism from special interest groups and the many people who liked Jimmy. It also makes SMU look bad for hiring him. We were supposed to know Jimmy better than anyone because he worked here so long, but he had never been a head coach, i.e. a manager. It's a different skill set from being an assistant.

Jimmy is a great guy, but he isn't cut out to be the head coach of a Division I program with Top 25 aspirations. When his mismanagement spilled over into NCAA violations, the opportunity was there to cut ties.

If you want the truth and you like Jimmy Tubbs (and who doesn't like Jimmy?) I suspect you're not going to like what you hear. I think the administration is taking the high road and not trying to smear Jimmy. And also trying to save face for making a bad hire.

In other words, you think that SMU lied, to save Jimmy or save face or whatever, but lied nonetheless.

He was fired after NCAA violations were found in his program. I see no lie in that.

It may not be the whole story behind his firing, but it's the truth.

I don't care that he was fired because I don't think he was going to elevate our program. However, the notion that he was fired because of NCAA violations in his program inaccurate in that it is not representative of the real reason for his dismissal. It may have been one of the reasons he was fired, but in that case Mike Cavan should have been fired the season the Malin scandal and NCAA violations arose. I don't think race played a part, but the image projected by Coach Tubbs may have. After all Coach Doherty has a presence that few others have. No administration could ever admit to firing him based on his image etc., but at the same time I understand jtstang's point because giving a ridiculous reason such as the one given based on the way the Malin scandal was handled is insulting to the intelligence of anyone who follows the program.

I think SMU is very lucky that Tubbs willingly accepted his buyout with the usual non-disclosure clause because this would be a delightful classic little slander, defamation and business dispargement claim and could have cost SMU millions. Its simply bad business practice to release inaccurate, pretexual reasons for dismissal and any Lawyer will tell you that.

alright, cant let this one go. tubbs may have been a poor administrator, in fact, that wouldnt surprise me at all. So why would it have surprised the AD and smu? get the guy the administrative help he needed and let him be the likeable face of the program who could recruit. bottom line is mistakes were made, but smu did not give the support it should have, and in the end looks bad for years to come in the community for it. yes, tubbs was not perfect, yes he made mistakes, but cutting a guy loose after two years for what amounts to not much was wrong. doherty is a good get for smu, if he stays around. still, the tubbs thing had a bad smell. and besides, as charismatic as Doh is, the product on the floor tonight against Prairie View was no different than last year whatsover. surely you guys see that. i didnt expect it be either, so save the debates.

I agree the product I have seen in all the home games is no different than the one last year except that Doh gets and/brings more hype. Can Doh teach these guys how to break a press? We sure struggled bringing the ball downcourt all night long tonight.

Re: Malin and Tubbs

There's a difference between the Malin and Tubbs incidents. Unless there's evidence I'm not aware of, the Malin incident was a clear case of a rogue assistant. Tubbs was reported to be directly involved in wrongdoing.

Granted, what we've heard publicly that Tubbs was accused of seems like petty stuff. But keep in mind that what has been leaked about the Tubbs investigation is most likely what his attorney wanted the press to know.

Yes, it doesn't pass the smell test, but unless we know the other charges you just have to trust that SMU's administration made the right call. The fact Tubbs went so quietly and signed the non-disclosure agreement indicates that there really is more to the investigation, or at the very least that Tubbs could see the writing on the wall. Either way, things weren't working out. If nothing else comes out besides burgers and laundry detergent, it gives Tubbs a chance to get hired elsewhere. If more serious violations are revealed, he may never work again, at least at the college level.

And as far as SMU getting Tubbs administrative help, I mentioned that was an option, but really that's a band-aid solution. That might have worked had Tubbs been a uniquely charismatic individual, one whose strength of personality (or record of success) could overpower his management shortcomings. But in Jimmy's case, while he is an immensely likeable fellow, it would have resulted in an even bigger leadership problem. And quite frankly, Tubbs did have a full staff under him. How much help do you need?

The roster Doherty has is a less talented roster than we had last season and no one can sanely argue otherwise. In addition to that, this team has a very solid win against Dayton and a very close loss to a good FSU team. Last year we lost to Louisiana Monroe, whom we beat by 33 points this year. I expected us to improve to a game or 2 above .500 with Doherty at the helm, which would be doing more with less as compared to last season. So far he and the Mustangs are exceeding my expectations.
