Broken Policies

Postby Billy Joe » Fri Dec 15, 2006 5:10 pm

Why is it SMU is never considered by Div. 1-A transfers? The TX QB is choosing between TCU, Houston, and UNT possibly. SMU doesn't even get a look. For those of you who say we already have a qb, so does all of those other schools. Every year our competition gets transfers that add a big boost to their teams. We seem to get none. Is it because we do not accept the transfer hours? Does SMU present a barrier that discourages transfers from looking at us? It gets real frustrating to see this every year.

Hes not considering SMU because Houston and TCU are 10x more likely to win their conference than we are, and because the TCU and UH jobs are up for grabs. SMU is too in love with Willis, so Snead wouldn't even consider it. Thats my opinion.

As for transfers in general, you do bring up a good point. It seems like nobody wants to transfer here. Odd.

Not. Maybe they don't think they could beat out Willis; but TCU didn't win their conference and the Cougars margin on us is small.

Normally if a DI transfer is going to another DI school, they want to go to a top contender...something that we are not ...

Willis being firmly entrenched as a freshman starter might have had something to do with it. Sneed obviously has a better recruiting pedigree but why would a QB who is leaving a school where he thought he was destined to ride the pine behind a classmate transfer to a school whose QB was the the freshman of the year in his conference? Generally, I think there are transfer issues which have been discussed extensively on this board as to why we've not gotten many transfers unlike UH, UTEP, and TCU.

jtsupporta you sure have a lot of opinions about recruiting today-very little factual support. UTEP got a bushel of transfer when they sucked and UH got a boatful of transfers when they were mediocre. Baylor has had a steady stream of transfers. UNLV had a top USC QB transfer last year. Transfers transfer for playing time usually and often to return home.

I like how it says he doesn't run from competition, yet he decomitted from Florida and is now transferring from UT. Yeps sounds like someone that doesn't run from competition....unless it is for the starting job.

Question on transfers. I had understood the rules of the NCAA disallowed us from contacting transfers unless they specified an interest in us first. I now read this morning here in Arkansas that since the Williams kid who is leaving Arkansas has obtained his release, that any school can contact him. Now I understand there are ways to let transfers know you are interested in a clandestine manner, but what I am trying to find out is if it is true that he is now open game for any school to contact since Nutt gave him an unconditional release. The kid is saying he is going to go through the recruiting process all over again by visiting schools that contact him and listening to all the pitches.

Realize that I have no reason to believe he is or would be interested in SMU. He is strongly considering TT and Florida where he would hope to catch 60 passes a year, but I am wondering when and if a school can legally under NCAA rules contact a transfer. Thanks in advance for the answer.

Didn't we get a look by a good QB from Northwestern several years ago? As I recall, we did not get him because SMU would not accept his transfer credits. From Northwestern. Yes, that jock sniffing dumbed down football factory, Northwestern.

Mrydel,

Once they are granted permission, all applicable recruiting rules apply. They can go through the process again. But a school can block another univeristy by stating on the release they can not talk to so and so university. It`s one of the most abused rules because one is not supposed to talk to an individual directly or indirectly yet they end up where they want to go directly.

There have been claimed changes to the Division 1A transfer policy at SMU for the entire university which I believe have gone or will go into effect this year. It has been previously discussed on here. As I read it there was a lot of discretion left to department heads or committees on exactly what courses would be accepted for transfer. That's one of the reasons I have said I'm eagerly awaiting this recruiting class to see how that policy change might work in reality. It seems that Doherty has had a reasonably free hand in the recruitment of Prep Players since he has signed two and offered another who still hasn't committed(Katuka). Last year it looked like SMU got some Division 1A transfers most of which were walkons (actually a greyshirt, an Air Force transfer and two invited walkons) but of a much higher caliber than before. Let's see what happens in practice not theory in football recruiting especially with JUCO recruiting and Division 1A transfers.

He's played 1 year of college football-his numbers were 194-359 2148 yards. Let's wait a couple of years until we call him a total failure. The point is he is the best THEY had. PRESUMABLY if you get a transfer who is better than the kid he replaces then you have improved your team just like UH, UTEP, Tulsa and TCU have improved their team with Division 1A Transfers. Its up to to the Head Coaches to make a decision on extending offers and to which players. But I don't want SMU's Coach to have one hand tied behind his back if a player could help.

I don't know a great deal about the Snead kid. I really don't know a lot about Justin Willis, either, but I saw him play 7 times this year.

If a QB I'm considering a transfer within Texas, SMU probably isn't at the top of my list, either. Maybe he'd beat out Willis, maybe Willis would beat him out. Maybe he thinks he can start from Day One, wherever he goes, or maybe he thinks Willis and Coach Bennett are best friends and that he'd never be allowed on the field. If nothing else, there's a Freshman All-America at SMU, and not at Cougar High or Frog High. Cougar High's QB is wide open, right? And this kid played for that coach in HS? Too many reasons for him to go elsewhere.
