Hope for Alcohol sales at Ford?

Liquor vote in the works that would cover University Park. Not sure if the city has to then ratify it or if it supercedes city authority...things could get interesting if this passes and Ford is then able to sell alcohol. If you live in district 3 and want Ford to be wet vote on this.

I wouldn't think that 65 is raining on any parade, and nor might SMU.
After all, it is Southern METHODIST University, not Baylor.

And Will Finnin certainly doesn't have jack to say about it. He is too busy replacing every mention of Jesus Christ with "God of the Cosmos" or some drivel like that.

And not to unduly point fingers, but two of the people who kept alcohol out of SMU were Laura Lee Blanton & Ruth Altschuler. Right, wrong, or indifferent, Ruth is probably still going to have something to say about it.

I don't think it will be a religious or moral issue with SMU. It will be a liability issue - plus the hassle of dealing with drunks.

And then you might drive away some of the families SMU needs to attract to games (parents spend money, kids mean future business, it's all good). Of course, you can always set up alcohol-free sections, but I'm not sure those really work.

If UP were to go wet, it would be interesting if a beer distributor offered SMU major bucks to open taps at Ford and Moody. It would have to be a LOT of money to make SMU even consider it. Then again, do SMU games have the crowds to warrant such an offer?

My guess is the concession to allow drinking on The Boulevard will be as far as SMU will go. And if they do allow beer sales in the stadium, watch them eliminate BYOB on The Bouelvard. You'll have to get your suds at an SMU-approved beer stand at $8 a cup.

As it stands now, I've never noticed an intoxication problem at SMU games. Some people can make a Boulevard Buzz last all game. Besides, you guys never heard of a flask?

What schools sell beer to the general public at their on campus football stadiums during NCAA events?

From my very limited, but trusted, past inside info. I've heard that the school was pushing to sell alcohol in Ford within the past few years, but because UP was dry that was impossible. That is why I brought this up to see if anyone knows the law as far as if UP will be forced to become wet if this passes. And taking this further, if SMU has any plans under the new regime to pursue alcohol sales.

At the very least I believe they should provide an area for season ticket holders to purchase beverages in an area similar to the Mustang Stables. If I recall correctly (it's been a few years, I could be WAY off) but I believe that was the original thinking behind the stables. You can make it a club by charging season ticket holders a nominal membership fee and that way the University has somewhat of a control on who drinks, i.e no students...who knows, it might even force people like jtstang to buy season tix because that would be the only way they would be able to drink. It's not ideal for the causal fan who wants a brew, but it would be better than the flask route...whiskey angers my blood, and so does SMU football, not a good combo.

I'll fire off an email to Orsini and see if I can get a straight answer.

University of Houston is the only D1A school in Texas that I know of. It makes the games quite enjoyable!

Univ. Of North Carolina has a club set up before games in their Bowles Center (I think the name may have changed recently) that has free beer, wine, and food before the game for all club members. It's a practice gym where they cover the floor to protect it, set up tables and chairs and have a big screen projector showing ESPN or other games going on at that time. It's a great way to pre-game for basketball games. UNC also has something similar for football games called the Carolina Club, which has a nice bar and restaurant set up. Although food and drinks are paid on a member's account.

If we did that here we would constantly be dribbling into the tables and chairs. Thank goodness we are getting a practice facility.

I don't know that it is a UP issue, seeing as how they sold beer inside the Stadium Club this season.
