SMU MEN’S BASKETBALL ADDS GEORGE LYNCH TO STAFF

DALLAS (SMU) --- George Lynch, a 12-year NBA veteran and NCAA Champion, has joined the SMU men’s basketball staff, head coach Matt Doherty announced Tuesday. Lynch becomes the team’s administrative assistant/graduate manager.

“I am excited to announce the addition of George Lynch to our staff,” says Doherty. “His background speaks volumes, but it is George’s character that sets him apart. He will help our program with day-to-day operations, along with mentoring our young men. Our players couldn’t find a better role model than George.”

Lynch joins the Mustangs after averaging 22.8 minutes, 6.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 774 games during his 12 NBA seasons. He was selected in the first round (12th overall) by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1993 NBA draft and played for four franchises: Lakers, Vancouver Grizzlies, Philadelphia 76ers, and New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. He was named All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-Final Four Tournament in 1993 after helping lead the North Carolina Tar Heels to the NCAA Championship. Lynch also played in the NBA Finals in 2001 when his 76ers won the NBA Eastern Conference.

Lynch is the third member of the SMU basketball staff with an NCAA championship ring. Doherty was a member of the 1982 North Carolina team and associate head coach Mike Garland was an assistant at Michigan State when the Spartans captured the title in 2000.

“I'm excited about the opportunities and challenges that Coach Matt Doherty has awarded me in working with SMU, his staff, and his players,” states Lynch. “Coach Doherty has established a good foundation for building something special here at SMU."

The Mustangs visit Metroplex rival TCU on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m. The game is on CSTV and is the first of five nationally televised SMU games this season.

Absolutely. Coach Doherty can say he played with some famous bald guy, Coach Garland can say he coached an NCAA championship team, and now Coach Lynch can say he knows EXACTLY what it takes to have a long NBA career. This is a huge pickup.

Great hire! Congrats and welcome to The Hilltop!

Makes you wonder: just what is Doherty saying to these folks to get them to come to SMU...?

Great addition. I know this may sound a little too sunshiney for some, but I get the feeling Coach Do may be planning on staying at SMU longer than some believe. I think it is a perfect fit for both him and SMU.

Hopefully he can help build back the fan base that we had when I was going to school in the 70's. Moody should have at least 5,000+ attendance for its games. Of course, it will help if we start playing some teams that are better than Division II. Also someone is going to have to pick up the slack for Max Williams and all the tickets he was buying since it appears he no longer is coming to the games.
