DALLAS -- The committee studying where to place the George W. Bush Presidential Library said Thursday it is entering into discussions with Southern Methodist University.
First lady Laura Bush’s alma mater had been rumored to be the frontrunner among the three finalists: Baylor University in Waco, which is near the couple’s Crawford ranch, and the University of Dallas.
Bush’s library is expected to cost at least $200 million, financed with private donations. The library is expected to draw 500,000 visitors annually and bring millions to the local economy.

TO: SMU Students, Faculty and Staff
FROM: R. Gerald Turner, President
It is my pleasure to inform you that Don Evans, Chairman of the George W. Bush Presidential Library Search Committee, notified us that SMU has been selected by the Committee for the next phase of planning discussions. These discussions will begin after the first of the year.
We do not know how long these discussions will take. However, any significant announcement concerning the process will come from Chairman Evans. Today at 2:30 pm SMU is hosting a press availability to which Trustees and the campus community are invited. The press availability will be held in the Hughes-Trigg Ballroom.
We are obviously delighted to have reached this final stage of the selection process.

For those of you disappointed with this decision, please temper your views for a while and let the process unfold. I was avidly against the Clinton Library being put in Little Rock, but will now admit that the location has been a great boon to the city and will continue to be so. Regardless of your feeling for Bush personally or politically, this will be a great gain for the City of Dallas and more importantly SMU.
