Observations from TCU game

Postby friarwolf » Fri Dec 22, 2006 9:12 am

Pros: We played crappy and won. Winning games at the buzzer is a good thing. We are getting better at handling the press and we avoided the half court trap by staying in the center of the court. We stayed patient and didn't throw the offense out the window when we got down by 9. Epps is a stone cold killer from the corner. We now have 2 coaches on the bench wearing national championship rings so we've got that going for us.......

Cons: We were 0 -3 on converting fast break layups. If a stat were kept on this, we would be the worst in the nation. I still don't know if we have converted one this year. This has become a mental thing. Our big men don't catch and shoot down low on the blocks. They catch, gather themselves, and then try to go up. They need to catch and dunk. Period...We either need to hard foul on drives to the hole or just let the other team score but please stop this pitty pat foul crap that leads to too many and 1's for the other team. I hope Lynch can help our big men on these last two things. Our team has bad hands..........

Disclaimer: I know it was not good sportsmanship and it happened because the kids were ecstatic over winning but......it was fun watching Dez take off to the locker room after hitting that shot with the entire team except for Killen chasing after him. Killen and the coaches lined up and shook the tcu players' hands.

We had 23 turnovers. That has to stop. We will get buried in conference play if we do that. We did not protect the ball well on the dribble and we made ill advised passes. Killen seemed uncomfortable at the point in the second half, I'm not sure why. Was Fall hurt? He was on the bench the entire second half including the last minute when I would have thought they would put him in to make it harder for TCU to go inside. Obviously, trying to draw a backcourt charge at an away game with 8 seconds left is not very smart. If he gets into the lane, you don't have a choice but to try it, but outside, you rarely get that call on the road.

We don't make hard (velocity) passes. We feather everything and that leads to stolen passes. However, we as a team don't have good hands so maybe that's why we feather the passes. Catch 22...........

TCU - especially Ryan Wall - played Killen as a pass only guard and Wall was just anticipating John's passes. I am sure we are going to see teams mimic that from now on, too. I would like to see us set a pick for John where he goes straight up the gut instead of side to side and get him some 10 -12 foot looks or just go to the hole to make people start respecting him.

Early in the second half, Fall picked up his fourth foul. He was pulled and never returned. Don't know if he was injured or not.

Fall gets reduced minutes in some of the competitive games SMU has played this year. You guys love the blocks but if you look at the big games put up by Falls opponent last year I believe that Doherty realizes he is somewhat a defensive(and offensive) liability against the better schools on our schedule. Notice he only got about 16 minutes against Florida St.

Thank you for fixing the site. I haven't been able to get in since before the TCU game. Two things from the game: I thought it was very classy that Doherty made the team come back out to shake hands. For those of you that thought Ryan Wall look good, he could have been a Mustang. He wanted to transfer to SMU, but Tubbs didn't want him. I thought he was the best guard on the floor for either team. The only reason that he isn't starting for TCU is because he plays the same postion as the head coach's son does.

I had no idea of that, he was the best player on the floor. That is crazy.

Ponyfan if you could read you would see that I said he was the best guard on the floor that night. I wish we had a guard that could pass, shoot and make steals.

I think he was agreeing with you, and saying it's crazy he isn't a Mustang.

Too bad, Wall would be a difference maker for the Mustangs. Talk about someone who goes full speed all the time and has tallent and skill.
