Our fans are down right comatose compared to Maryland and Duke. Our fans seem to think this is the 1950's when people are quiet during free throws and referees are given respect and opposing coaches are given a free ride. See what Coach K endures at a game at Maryland. See how the UNC coach is treated at Duke. This is a different game and our fans need to get used to it.

First of all...

I loved the cowbells during the football games. I need a new one as I broke mine at the Rice game. If not appropriate for bball, ok...we just need to be loud in other ways!

Mine did too! Guess it's good that the football season is over and I can hopefully get a new one at the beginning of next season. I think some things are good football "traditions" and some things are good bball "traditions". I won't carry a yellie (small plastic megaphone) to a football game. That's a basketball tradition. I like the cowbells at football and hope it does become a tradition.

As far as loud people at the basketball games. Maybe if everybody else would get off their arse and make some noise, you probably wouldn't notice the standout people. Honestly, I hardly notice DiamondM cheering at many basketball games. You want to know why? Everybody that I sit with is yelling during the entire game. You don't have to cheer or yell every second of the game. I don't. But I make way more noise than most of the other fans at the games.

I have never understood why people act like they are wearing seat belts at our sporting events. You can't yell at your boss, you shouldn't yell at your wife (unless your dinner is cold) so why not yell at the other coach / team / ref.

Let your hair down, sure would help if you could booze it up.

And frankly, I don't think there are many queen of England types at the games. The fans appluad when appropriate. The fact that most fans don't berate the other team or the officials or otherwise act a fool doesn't make them less of fans.

They had something to cheer about, they were beating a team they shouldn't beat on their home floor. The SMU fans roared when Bamba had the put back dunk, but it was all downhill after that. I guess in retrospect we should have stood and cheered when our team successfully got the ball inbounds.

And I personally think taking an overly narrow view of "appropriate" and an overly broad view of "fool" does make one something less of a fan. Is it appropriate to stand up and yell and clap and make noise while your team is down by 5 and trying to make a big defensive stand? (or incidentally, to stand up and yell on every defensive 3rd down) I think so. Is it appropriate to stand up and make all manner of noise when the 30 opposing fans are making twice as much noise as the entire home crowd at least 20 times their size? Not only do I think so, but I think not doing so and letting the opposing fans show you up makes a fool out of that person and not me. It happened more than once against NC A&T when we still had very much of a chance to pull that game out.

DiamondM, I can't believe you've been to Wichita State and KU games. I grew up going to Shocker games! My high school speech teacher was Wee Shock in her college days. Anyway, there have always been at least a few thousand hardcore WSU fans who cheered their hearts out even when the team had a down year (or decade). They cheered just as hard then as they do now that WSU is top 25. Wow, I wish SMU fans were more like that--made it sooo much more fun at games.

Look, I know F2T has a problem with you but I was at the NCAT game and if it's any consolation I did not hear you yelling, and I don't have a problem if you were. Funny but neither did I hear that other guy or his friends who couldn't hear you because their little group was constantly yelling. So all of you need to be even louder if you can. Sorry, but yelling like that when we are losing to NCAT after blowing a big first half lead is just not my style. If that makes you the better fan so be it.

I did see you blowing that slide horn with the band so good job on that front.

My mom graduated from WSU in 68, and my grandpa was a season ticket holder for years so we went to a number of games with him whenever we were visiting from KC probably mostly between 1980 and 1990. Went to a few games in Allen Field House (and Kemper of course) before college, then went to a bunch of games while home on winter break from SMU and visiting my KU friends in Lawrence. Surprise surprise, I often sat with the band there too.

Unfortunately the WuShocks have been sliding a little bit the last couple of weeks. It's a shame, but they'll still get a tourney bid provided they don't completely tank in conference play.

Thanks 88. But I guess I'm not who WTF or whatever-his-name-is is talking about since when I yell it is never, and I mean NEVER, "for no apparent reason." I am not just some mindless bimbo enjoying hearing herself "scream." I yell encouragement when good plays are made, yell at the refs when they suck, yell when we need a big defensive stand, yell to disrupt a free throw, etc. That is how real fans act at a basketball game. They don't sit on their arse and golf clap when the team amuses them occasionally. And I say this out of experience growing up and watching basketball games at KU, Wichita State, and of course spending my post graduate time (and money) on the floor of Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Phone out at home, which means no DSL, so I'm just getting around to posting.

I didn't do a good enough job in my previous reply. First, sorry if I named you and that's not who FtoT was talking about. It was supposed to be a friendly comment and I should have thrown more support behind it. I think anyone who yells at the game is to be commended and I totally support you 100%.

If your six friends didn't renew their tickets because someone was too loud, then that's the worst excuse ever. Can they not see that they could move to the other side of the court? Sounds to me like they're just looking for excuses.

Oh 88, you know I sent my husband to get on your case in jest. Like you, my guess is that FordtoTolbert is probably talking about me, since I can't think of another loud ex-band chick who is at all of the games. But my point was just that my yelling is always purposeful, never raunchy (at least not since I graduated SMU so many years ago), designed so that players and refs can actually hear it, and if some people wanted to a nice quiet, uninterrupted evening, then (a) they should sit behind me or on the other side rather than simply not renew their tickets, or (b) stick with the Dallas Public Library. It's guaranteed to be quiet there.
