Observations from the game

Postby friarwolf » Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:56 pm

Derrick came home!!!! He attacked the basket - missed a bunch of shots - but he attacked the basket. We look like a different team when he does that. Please don't stop - the shots will start falling. Rack is painful to watch with his one handed rebounding. Please Rack, use both hands. Could we please learn how to get to the backside for rebounding position?????? Time out to rant about the jumbo tron : Nice to see we have pretty pink horsies on our jumbo tron to go with our cute pink jerseys. We are bush league - could we please get someone to adjust the color on the damn wide screens. Cheerleaders in Aggie Maroon up on the screens is pretty embarrassing, too. Free throws guys, free throws......Killen looked pretty good - the guy is a gamer. Our big guys just don't have very good hands..................Man we played good defense that second half. Doherty was coaching his [deleted] off in the second half. He was fun to watch.

Most important stat of the night: our last six posessions of the game - zero good offensive possessions and zero points...................................

Great comeback for a team that struggles to score. We should have won this game if only they had played smarter at the end.

Here are my gripes. The cheerleaders came out on the floor once the whole game, but I guess I should be happy they were there. The band. I know this is a touchy subject for you ex band members, but the song selections tonight were a real buzz kill. When we started our comeback in the second half by scoring on two strait possessions, the band broke out a Benny Goodman number from the 40's. The only thing missing was the clarinet solo. Sound system. When is the new one coming because it sounded like a tin can tonight.

Sound system has to be from the 50's. It will be nice when that gets updated as well.

New sound system has been installed and it sounds great. It was very cool at the Brown game. Unfortunately, the street dancers just before tonight's game were using a song with a very stong bass. The bass was vibrating the whole colliseum and then it suddenly popped and the whole sound system failed for the remainder of the song. They had to use either a backup system or it was just the loss of the bass system that caused the problem. But when the sound came back, it was not nearly the same. It was tinny and awful. I feel certain it will be fixed by the next game.

I was in town for the Pan Am game and the sound system SUCKED. It was way worse than the Moody sound system I remember. The old one was by no means the AAC, but it wasn't bad. The one I heard at the Pan Am game sounded like a tin can.

That was actually "Lollipops and Roses", a Herb Alpert classic. And as a band alum, I was mortified and embarrassed that song was played there. Had I been a playing alum tonight, I'd have walked off the bleachers at that moment.

Somebody needs to teach the new guy what basketball is all about.

I guess since you weren't a playing band alum, you didn't have any reason to be embarrassed and mortified, and since you weren't playing you didn't have to think about walking off the bleachers. And since you don't participate in playing at the games, your opinion doesn't count didly squat unless you're a member of the Diamond M Club or contribute to the band partnership.

Not sure about the overall sound system but when talking to Brad Sutton about the sound on All Access he said there was a problem with some wiring and undoing of some wires when the new scoreboard went up. By the time it was noticed, the IT guy they needed to work on it was off on vacation or something and would be back this week. Maybe it did not all get resolved before the game. That may be why there was no radio feed also. I hope to find out the answers later this morning.

Is this thread about observations of the GAME or the pomp and circumstance surrounding the game?

You want my credentials? I was five year member of Mustang Band. I played a basketball season as an alum because they needed help and asked me. This year, I played in many games over the break, as many as I could. I have been a member of the Diamond M Club for more than 10 years running. I think my opinion counts a little more than didly squat.

More importantly, I'm a season ticket holder for SMU basketball. So, when those of you who only come when there are alumni band games (and thanks for doing that) go "see you next fall" status after Friday's game, I'll still be there listening to "Lollipops and Roses" at the most important time of the game.

The Mustangs were finally showing signs of life and on a 5-0 run going into that timeout. The crowd was finally into the game. Timeout on the floor. We hear "Lollopops and Roses". By the end of the timeout, every single person in the arena had taken a seat and any crowd buzz had turned into crickets.

DIAMONDM, want to chime in?

I was right about the touchy subject. I love the band and apreciate their spirit and commitment to basketball, but that was just a terrible terrible time to play that song. It sounds like the theme to Jeopardy. Something like EWF's "Wonderland" which is in the bands reportoire would have been great.

That lollipops thing was not good. I think the football offensive coordinator made up the play list. You just play the songs/run the plays in the order listed... no regard to game situation. Worse than that, though, was the scary jumbotron "promo" by the SMU womens basketball coach... that was pathetic.
