Observations from the game

So Orsini said "Hey, play that snappy Herb Alpert tune in the middle of the second half!"?

OK, so the entire game is now run off a script. Good for the athletic department to try and organize things for a change.

But if you're the band directors, you've got to get some flexibility written into the scripts to play stuff as the game dictates. A locked script results in situations like last night and makes you look incompetent.

I think it's great that the game is being scripted and that the people in charge are trying hard improve the game atmosphere. In seasons past, there always seemed to be a mini war going on between the band director and the guy in charge of taped music. Bottom line for the band director, if it aint peppy, don't play it during time outs.

Sorry to contribute to the tangent, but it seemed the Band played the Battle Cry quiet a bit, but didn't play Peruna. Was it just me? If is wasn't just me what is there a reasoning for that? Just asking the question - I AM NOT CRITISING ANYONE.

Orsini did not say "Hey play .......", but as I posted, the adhoc band was playing from a limited book of music. It was scripted for the band to play at that point in the game and the directors made selections from the limited amount of music. At that point, Lollipops and Roses was all that was left. Could the director have vetoed the song and played Peruna or Battle? Probably, but he is learning this "scripted" game atmosphere also. Things will get better.

So true, and I can't agree more. I am sure this will change when everyone really understands what the "scripted" game means.

And JT there aint no way we were favored in this game. I cant believe what Doh has this group doing - cant wait for his guys to come in and supplement - I'm guessing we will have three freshman starters next year.

Hate to dissapoint you, but were favored by 10. I am a Doherty fan and thrilled to have him, but what exactly does he have this group doing? From my seat it looks like the same ole SMU problems. They give up easy baskets, they can't score under the basket, too many turnovers........

You're right, it's talent - lack of it. That's what is causing the same old problems as last year, because it's the same players minus B-Hop. The second half showed what this team is capable of when following Doherty's plan: Play some defense, limit mistakes and work for good shots. And most of all, play smart.

Unless we're completely overmatched, as in the Oklahoma game, Doherty's coaching is keeping us in games. I can't wait to see what this guy can do when he gets some real ballers in here.

You can't be serious! B-Hop shot us out of more games than he kept us in. I doubt if he shot 40% from the field. He probably shot around 33% from 3pt range. Assists were probably SLIGHTY higher than his turnovers.

He and Sasser were the most selfish players that I have ever seen. Neither one could have played for Doherty.

Only if BHop plays Doh's style of ball. If Bhop plays his selfish streetball style, he could never play for Doherty.

I agree, B-Hop wasn't perfect.

But a lot of times, what appeared to be "selfish streetball" was B-Hop working to create a shot because no one else on the team was capable of doing it.

Sasser was selfish because his teams had other options. Name the other reliable scorer SMU had last year. Name one this year. Our leading scorer is averaging just 12 points a game.

Doherty would love to have B-Hop because he would have a go-to guy offensively. Instead, we're trying to win with defense and praying we can put something together offensively.

Hard for Hop to have assists when you have no one to pass it to that could make the shot. And I bet Doherty would love to have Hop or Sasser right now, and if they didn't play his game it would be off to the showers for them.

You can't be serious. Sasser had 122 assists his senior year ( > 4/game), and he was not our point guard. If those are the most selfish players you've ever seen, then you aren't a basketball fan.
