the NBA has music playing almost the entire game. They started in spurts at the start of a play but now it seems almost constant. Kind of ridiculous.
If you are going to pipe in music, the speakers have to be updated.

It was the "hey! i put you to sleep song." And for once I agree with Diamond M. Please, put an end to Lollipops and Roses. It has no place in Basketball Band. Of course, taking it out would mean taking out 20 percent of the basketball band's music in the folder.

I took a friend of mine to his first NBA game last week (he lived out of the country when the Mavs started to do well). He commented that it seems like the game has started to try to be more like a video game instead of the other way around. Microphones on the baskets so that you can hear every sound...music playing the entire game...etc.
I hope that college basketball is not headed the same way. Let's find a good balance. There can be the flash and excitement with the new scoreboard and maybe a new sound system soon. But, there needs to be a balance. As long as the band doesn't play Lollipops and Roses, let the band play Dr. Who, Blues Brothers, Peruna, Pony Battle and whatever else they want to play. Keep the fans in the game. Instead of playing "Hit the Road, Jack" over the loud speakers, create a graphic for the left/right cheer. Work with the fans and not against them.

2. Speaking of Piped in Music: Just say no. It is my understanding that there are certain times where the band has been told not to play so that they can play some chosen music. This is WRONG. Piped in music should be at a minimum at a college game.
It's the nature of the beast. Happens everywhere, and SMU is trying to get more mainstream (or so it seems) with its gameday presentation. Get used to it, because I doubt it will change any time soon. DiamondM wrote:7. No floor wiper children running around playing tag during time outs. Absolutely agree.
The person I went to the Pan Am game with also commented on how unprofessional this was. If everyone in the stands can see this, why can't the marketing/operations people see this? What the hell is lollipops and Roses, sounds absolutely horrible for a b-ball game, but what is it exactly?

A song that the band played during a timeout. It's slow, and mellow, and it was played when the crowd was really pumped up. It had the effect of completely killing the mood as though you switched from playing Barry White to Iron Maiden while trying to get your special lady friend into bed. The scuttlebutt in my section was that it was a song the current director really likes and so plays it as often as possible.
The donkey's name is Kiki.
On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?
Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.

If you want to hear a sample, click here - Song Sample- and then click on Lollipops & Roses.

I don't know that it's as much as he likes but he figures that the band only needs to know 3-4 tunes so why not just pick something "easy" like Lollipops and Roses. For the record, he had pre-scheduled what he was going to have played at the time outs and it so happened that at the time out in question, that what was called. Apparently, he couldn't figure out that the way the game was going that we needed something to keep the crowd going and to maybe do something like...I don't know...play Peruna? I Won't be surprised if this happens again during the season.

For those of you old enough to remember, "Lollipops & Roses" was the song that was played on The Dating Game when the girl would come out on stage and be introduced by host Jim Lange.

Yep. "Spanish Flea" was played when the chosen 'date' would walk around the corner from the other side of the stage.
Bit of trivia: two of the bachelors on the very first episode of The Dating Game were Steve Martin and Andy Kaufman.

Obviously one of your kids is running around playing tag. I don't care about the age, as long as they pay attention wipe the floor and then get there little butts off the court. I must have watched the kids wipe the same spot outside the paint 100 times, totally neglecting the part of the court that needs wiping down.
The floor wipers I saw during the OUS v Ten game did their job.
