Observations from the Houston Game

Postby friarwolf » Sat Jan 13, 2007 8:32 pm

#1 In the early games of the season, the guys were coming out focused on executing to please their coach, now they are coming out trying not to displease their coach. This is causing the guys to be tight and error prone. Coach Doherty needs to learn to use the whip sparingly and use it when it is effective, not as the only means to motivate his team.............

#2 I wonder how long before this thread gets hijacked and turned into another discourse on whether to play Whipped Cream and other Delights or whatever the hell that song is by Herb Alpert.........................

We were completely out athleted (if thats even a word) in this game. I was at the Memphis/UH game Thursday night and came away knewing UH would be tough for us. Memphis played a smothering man to man defense and UH still managed to get off 25-30 3 pointers at a percentage of 40 percent or more. Being that they play only gaurds and wings it was impossible for our bigs to be effective on defense and UH scored at will against us. Other observations from the stands:

- The important thing to notice from Bamba's good game tonight was his quality establishment of position in the post. He got wide and made a target for entry passes to him.

- The UH offense forced Doherty to sit Rack who was playing very well, but certainly does not have the speed to guard guys on the outside.

- The UH defense played Killen perfectly, essentialy daring him to dribble with his left and he couldn't.

- Ike vanishes again against a decent opponent. I really am just not sold on the guy although I know he had a monster second half against So Miss which I did not see.

- Jamar Thorpe reminds me of a more athletic version of what I always thought/hoped Pearson would be.

- Dez wouldn't stay on the floor to shore up our ball handling problems because UH continued to shoot right over him because of his size.

- Roberts had a hot hand for a little while in the second half but I wish he would have taken the ball to the basket more like he did a couple times in the game.
