Malzahn to Tulsa

Graham has hired OC Gus Malzahn from Arkansas to be Co-Offensive Coordinator at Tulsa. Malzahn will finaly get to put his No Huddle Spread Offense to work that Houston Nutt was both unwilling to try and unable to try due to McFadden and Jones capabilities in the backfield. Herb Hand, TE coach at West Virginia will be the other co-OC.

Malzahn basically "wrote the book" on the no huddle spread while perfecting it at Shiloh Christian Academy and Springdale High School. Both schools still average around 45 points a game using it.

It will be interesting to see what the recruits that were wavering at the end of the season, including Mitch Mustain who was coached by Malzahn in HS will do. One has already left for USC. The other 2 (Mustain and Ben Cleveland) had indicated they would stay, but now we will see.

I predict that Mustain will transfer and then Nathan [deleted] will switch from Rice to UA to follow his brother.

If Mustain transfers and has to sit out a year, he will finally get the red shirt year he desperately needs. Nutt did an injustice to this kid by playing him as a true freshman. One suspects that Lord Broyles order the kid to play from on high.

I totally agree. No way he was ready to step into SEC play. I am sure Mom had a lot with making Nutt do it though.

I seem to remember a Ms James verbalizing with Coach Meyer near the end of Craig's first season about how Craig wasn't getting enuf playing time with Dickerson and others being in the backfield. The last game of the season against Arkansas here in Little Rock, Meyer must have given James the ball on every play. He rushed for over 100 yards but was worn out by the end of the game. I never heard of her suggesting that again.

James was the last healthy running back we had at the end of the 1979 season. Charles Waggoner had broken his neck the game before the Ark game (TTU) and Dickerson had turf toe. Waggoner got his neck broken on the opening kickoff so James had plenty of playing time against TTU as well. There was a rumor that James looked into transferring to Alabama after the 1979 season and Bear Bryant told him he didn't want James anymore. Course that is purely a rumor.

Jim BoB Taylor in 1980 did transfer to Ga Tech because he was not pleased with his playing situation at SMU (he was a QB).

The only reason Mustain was 8-0 was McFadden,Jones,and the OL. Throw in a little Defense. Mustain never had command nor did he contribute in any way. When given a chance he was a detriment and he was pulled. He will probably be very good, maybe even great but he was a deer in the headlights this year other than his first series of his career against Southern Cal. If they had installed Malzahn's offense I am sure he would have performed well but the team as a whole would have suffered.

MM threw for les than 900 yards. He had 10 TDs and 9 INT. He didn't play against Tenn., Miss State or LSU. He had one QB sneak against Florida. He played against the 2/3rd team in the USC game.

He was not a positive and at times was a negative. One just can't expect a Freshman QB to absorb the complexities and speed of the college game. He will need time to develop. If he transfers and sits out, he could develop.

I am very interested to see Malzahn's offense at Tulsa. I bet they let him run his style that Broyles said would not work at a major level. I hope for our sake that Broyles is right.

man. what a week. Rice goes from top to bottom, while Tulsa just shot through the roof in terms of Power in the West. They are now the team to beat, especially if this offense is as good as advertised.

Out of curiosity, what was Malzahn making at Arkansas and how much will Tulsa pay him? Financially, is it a lateral move for him?

I'm wondering how much of a jump in pay (if any) it will be compared to what Tulsa used to pay its OC.

I have no idea about money but I can guarantee the stress level (although always high in coaching) is much less and the freedom will be much more. Malzahn has learned first hand the power of Lord Broyles. (As so affectionately referred to by ponyte.) Broyles has already "suggested" who he thinks should be the new OC (David Lee of the Cowboys and formerly UA). He says that it is solely Nutt's decision, but that is who he would choose. Right. Seems strange that Lee was commenting on coming to UA while the ink was still wet on the Malzhan deal.
