This is something that my wife and I have talked about for a very long time. She was a swimmer at a major Pac-10 school and all the athletes had a training table that was very organized to eat at. The football team actually had their very own training table that as she says was almost as good as anything in the whole city. Nutritionists, dieticians, all the works were used to make sure the athletes were getting the proper nutrition. I think that this is very key to the overall success of a program. Being a former SMU athlete, I just don't see the desire for this level of success at my beloved alma mater.
I'm not sure that Faucette can be blamed for some of the conditioning issues on this team-but I admit that this isn't my area of expertise because I don't have personal knowledge of what was going on. What I do know is that Phil Bennett has generally only been able to recruit players-and especially linemen who were 2-3 years from being able to physically compete on the Division 1A level. I have hunch this just might be a passing the buck thing. Bennett just has failed miserably to recruit offensive lineman for example who were Division 1A quality.
what is going onSMU athletics needs to get its head out of its [deleted]!!! you hire a guy like vic VILORIA (great hire) and you have no press conference, no article on your web site nothing (unless im wrong). Not to mention you cant even spell his name right on the web site directory. Same ole SMU. WOW! is all i have to say. This is a great hire and needs to be made a big deal about!
Training table is a great idea.....cost money though! so all you rich alums that want this WRITE A CHECK!
We had a training table when I was there (68-72), although if I remember correctly they did away with it the last year I was there and sent us to the regular cafeteria. Of course it was not based on the nutritional info that people use today but at least you got several large scoops of whatever you wanted. I guess it was pretty behind the times because the weight gaining regimen they had me on did not kick in until about the time I reached 40, but I now could play DT based on height and weight. Hopefully they can build our kids up quicker than 30-35 years.
I didn't even know Faucette was gone. He seemed like an okay guy to me.. didn't really see much of him except for on the practice field though. Grats to Vic!
I would love to hear what stallion knows about Vic... other than every stat that was ever written about him.. Vic is/was a great team leader and one of the most intense football players you will ever be around.. He is going to kick some serious [deleted] in the weight room, physically and figuratively... Congrats to Vic, I hope our players learn from his extremem intensity.
PB is held accountable for recruiting, coaching decisions, etc... Faucette was accountable for strength and conditioning. How many games did we play a hard 3 qtrs, only to have the other team in better shape? conditioning is about desire and pushing yourself, not what star recurit you were on rivals. WEST DIVISION CHAMPS 2010
great job at LSU? hmmmm lets see..he was an assistant there....maybe making 30k a year...now he is a director making probably around 50k a year....he has all the connections at LSU to one day get a head job at a major university....gotta say it was a hell of a step up from his old job!
like most guys who played for PB, they believe in him and the way he coaches, unlike our fans... WEST DIVISION CHAMPS 2010
My source says that Vic did such a good job for LSU's quarterback, JaMarcus Russell, that he is following him to SMU for training in preparation for the NFL draft. Guess you might see him in the weight room sometime soon!
So JaMarcus is coming to SMU?
All I heard was that Vic will be training him. Don't know if it will be at the school or a local gym.
From an unnamed player in one of my classes (an "unreliable source" as you people call it), "Did you know he got a new strength coach? Yea, he's really pushing us. I'm already past where I was at the beginning of the [2006] season"
1000!!!!! yay! Sir, shooting-star, sir.
Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.
I'm not sure that PB has been held accountable for anything frankly. If he was he would have been canned already. Here's to hoping that this season he shows why SMU has stuck with him.
