David Shivers. Played in the early 90s.

Any recent players play in the game?

Eric Castro?

I was kind of bummed when one of the alumni players sitting next to me played in the game, came back after halftime and asked his wife if she wanted to go eat, she asked if he wanted to stay, he said no.
boo.

It was probably Chad Elsey....whatever happened with his lawsuit against Dave Bliss for not following through on the promise to get him into and pay for Baylor Law? I assume it was dismissed.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

David Shivers

Postby The Falcon » Mon Jan 22, 2007 10:33 am

Someone asked who the player was that his 4 for 4 3pt shots.

Shivers played for John Shumate and it used to make me so mad.
Whenever he came into the game, he made things happen - he
was a catalyst and Shumate would not use him much. He was a player
with a great deal of talent and that intangible spark that you can't define
and yet he didn't get a lot of playing time.

We could have used his shooting in the UTEP game and we might
have won. Another tidbit - Shivers played in several summer
3 on 3 games in downtown Dallas and his team won the championship.

Wasn't Elsey. I know who it was and have opted not post his name - not that it matters.

I mean I understand if he had something to do, but his wife made it clear she was happy to stay. Guess if he would have made some shots in the halftime game he would have stayed. Just thought it was poor support from a former player.

Mike Niemi was also there. John Forinash was in the crowd right in front of me, but did not play -- apparently someone forgot to tell Dan Bell though, since everytime Greg Kinzer touched the ball, Dan attributed it to Forinash. I wish someone would have said something to Dan after the first time he made the mistake of thinking all big guys look alike, but no, he said it like four more times. John had a sense of humor about it though.

Between David Shivers and Chad Allen (he wasn't there, anyone know what he's up to? Also, for the life of me I can't remember our other early 90s 7 footer besides Greg Kinzer. Anyone remember?), we had lots of 3s in the early 90s.

Others in attendance that I can remember: Kris Lowe (had at least one 3 and a dunk), Matt Timmy, Bobby Aitkenhead (walkon with Dement), Jay Poerner (although now that I'm thinking about it, he may not have actually played).

And I was booing Elsey too. He is dead to me. I just can't believe (a) the athletic department would invite him back, (b) that he would dare to show his face (unless he's giving some ungodly amount of money to the Mustang Club or the new Crum Center), or (c) that his teammates aren't pissed at him for leaving them high and dry.

It looked like most of the guys didn't really talk to Elsey. After the game at halftime was over, Elsey walked off the court with his head down while everybody else was hanging out and being friendly. Good riddance! I hope to never see him at SMU again.

The other 7 footer was Bobby...Bobby Holcombe or Holkan??? Flat top...good guy. He probably graduated in 1992 - I graduated in 1993 so I knew most of the guys on the team then. I thought David Shivers played a lot & was a big part of the team but for some reason would always get in Shumate's doghouse - just my recollection. I loved good ole Tim Mason. That guy was a warrior - funny good guy.

Wasn't Tim Mason in one of the Larry Johnson grandmama commercials? I think he played in Japan a while, but don't know what's happened to him since.

Tim played in Japan for awhile but I don't know where he is now, don't know about the commercials. I'm guessing he would make a good coach...

I ran into Gerald Lewis about a year ago at the Y in White Rock. This was just a few weeks before he'd taken an asst. coaching at SE Louisiana.
