somewhat surprising that the highest paid non-BCS coach is Pat Hill. I also think Jeff Bower is getting hosed.

Those salaries dont surprise, Frentz might be the most overpaid coach of them all.

Charlies salary is not completely accurate, only him and school officials really know what he makes. I bet he makes more than stoops and a lil under sabans range.

I'm guessing you mean Weiss, not Weatherbie. One would be hard-pressed to pay me 130k to live in Monroe, LA, much less coach the football team

Can't say I agree with JTsupporta on this -- Kirk Ferentz has done a terrific job at Iowa, talking a traditional also-ran and making it annually a power, or at least a team with which the others must be very concerned, and a pretty decent football conference. Plus, he has NFL experience and is rumored every year to be on some NFL team's short list of candidates (there was a lot of talk that he'd take over in Pittsburgh for Bill Cowher, now there's speculation that he's biding his time and waiting for Romeo Crennel to run out of time in Cleveland). No coach is worth millions a year, in my opinion, despite the amount of money that the most successful coaches bring in to their universities. But within the market as it is, Ferentz earns his megabucks pretty well.

From a quick glance, it looks like we pay PB about average for a mid-major head coach.

Not sure I can go with ponyfan84's assessment. We're all disappointed with the way the season ended, but come on, this year's team was the best, most entertaining and most competitive we've had in 20 years. Where we need or want to be? Of course not. But to use the term you did to describe the Ponies' season is inaccurate and unfair. Here's hoping Coach Bennett and his staff win enough games that we're all ready to OK a raise.

Im not saying that Frentz is not a great coach, just overpaid for his past "success" in the BIG 10. Sure Iowa had a break out year in 2002 with Heisman runner up Brad Banks and a share of the Big Ten title but Frentz has not gotten that program near the top 10, or top 20 since then.

I just think hes overpaid

I can't say I have agreed with JTSupporta on ANYTHING before. You are right that Ferentz is constantly being approached by NFL teams and Iowa pays him what the market requires to keep him around.

Supporta, you mention '02 being a big year but '05 was pretty big too as I recall. 10-2 including that fantastic finish against LSU in the Peach Bowl was it? I am pretty certain they finished top 10 in the country that season. Sounds pretty good to me. Certainly does not fall in line with your "not gotten that program near the top 10, or top 20 since then." (fyi I think they were rated in the top 20 as recently as this season early on). Also, I recall that with that win Iowa reached its highest win total over any four year span in the history of the program.

Icon, you dont ever have to agree with me, most people in the forum dont agree with half the things I say. You are right about them finishing in the Top 10 during the 2004-05 season but what has his latest success been since then. After a 1-10 1st year he was able to get this team 3 straight 10+ win seasons, 2 shares of the Big Ten title, and the highest win total over any four year span in the history of the program. Sure they gave him the big bucks when the NFL called but ill be waiting to see what Ferentz does next season without Tate.

Couldn't an argument also be made that this was the easiest schedule we have played in 20 years? I honestly don't have much hope for next year after watching one of our few opportunities to go to a bowl game be squandered.

I actually believe that the team will have some holes to fill, but on the whole will be as good as this years team barring of course injuries, suspensions and the like. My concern as always is lack of depth. Our first string is competitive, its that we are not deep enough if someone goes down. That's where some JUCO's would be helpful. We have a good chance of coming out of the OOC schedule 2-2 again and I can even hope we pull an upset of the Froggies. Our conference schedule is moderately more difficult with USM, UCF and Memphis replacing Marshall, UAB and ECU. Since we never beat ECU, I view USM as a trade. The question is whether we can beat both UCF and Memphis (one or both of whom we play on the road). As far as the intra-division schedule, UH will be just as tough if not tougher on the road. Rice at home. UTEP at home without Palmer. Tulsa on the road should be a great game. Tulane at home. Can we win win three or four of those games? I think so. We should be 6-6 at least again or as good as 8-4. I don't see us being much better than that.
