Little tidbit on TCU & BCS

Postby HFvictory » Sun Jan 28, 2007 3:10 pm

Yes, SMU has the most recent victory against TCU and congrats. Here is just a little tidbit from the FWST FWIW:

Hello, big time
If you're still wondering and waiting for TCU football to make the big time, here's some food for thought:

Over the last five years, the Frogs have played nine games against teams from BCS conferences. They're 8-1 and came back and beat the only team (Texas Tech) they lost to in that span.

In four of the last five years, they've had the second-highest ranked team in Texas at the end of the season .

In the last two years, they've ranked higher than 10 of the Big 12 teams one year, higher than 11 in the other.

Over the last five years, coach Gary Patterson has posted the sixth-best record among all Division I-A coaches in the country (behind only the coaches at USC, Texas, Ohio State, Florida and Oklahoma)

Patterson ranks first among all non-BCS coaches in the country.

Hmmmm. Maybe we should consider the possibility that the wait is already over.

The 8 wins include OU at Norman, AZ, BU, TT, & IOSt. The one loss was obviously a disaster.

I hate you guys and always will. However, I am jealous of the success the toads have had and congratulate them for being committed to big time football and finding the right formula, whatever that is.

My hope is that ten years from now SMU can have a resume that equals or betters what tcu has done.

Man, I love seeing that T-Mac dunk on Bradley every time you post. Looking forward to a big SMU crowd making the drive to FW this fall.

The tables are slowly turning. TCU leads a near century old series by one game. These things run in cycles. Luckily, we broke their string of wins. Now lets increase ours in 07.

the tables are turning back toward TCU if anything. TCU has whipped Phil Bennett in recruiting worse in the last 3 years than they did in his first 3 years. I have no hesitation in saying the talent gap is getting much much bigger in TCU's favor.

There's a shocker.

Hey, Froggy High had more talent in 2005, too. Thankfully, the teams involved didn't just compare the rivals stars on each roster and award Froggy High the win.

TCU and SMU are excellent rivals, but it is even better when both teams are credible and competitive. Candidly, for more than ten years we haven't kept up our side of the equation.

However, two things are in play. First, TCU has topped out. Being an excellent MWC and mid-major program is good, but it is unlikely that you can build on that, even if they have winning programs year in and year out. Whether MWC or CUSA, the realities of BCS FB limit the high end. Boise State is an great example of a rare exception to the rule, not proof of parity in college conferences.

More importantly for the Frogs, the move to MWC will hurt them in the long run. No regional conference mates, one to two time zone differences, really difficult travel challenges for athletes, students, parents and fans, which places an extra penalty on BB and all their non-revenue sports, simply to satisfy their hubris of getting away from SMU and CUSA.

On the other side, SMU is improving and will not return to the depths of the last 15 years. I won't claim parity with them yet, but time and the realities of our respective situations give us a level playing field for the first time since the late eighties. As time moves on, it should tilt in our favor in FB, as it already does in most sports (women BB exception for the moment.)

With Steve Orisini, Coach Doh, improved athlete facilities (including a terrific Ford Stadium), better recruiting and the best damn campus in the land, I like our situation. With winning in FB and BB, even the students can get turned on again, along with the fans of Dallas.

I won't change places with them. The Mustang Nation is going to be "Top 25" Program in all dimensions.

Also, I note that TCU and SDS got a zero rating on Versus. 19,000 homes NATIONALLY. That's about how many people actually would show up for a game. Contrast that to the SMU -UAB game seen in 1 Million homes. The MWC is two years into a 5 year deal with Versus. It will be interesting to see if those kind of ratings numbers translate into recruiting advantages. Clearly the SMU-UAB game was not well played, but clearly fun to watch and Craig James and Doug Flutie said lots of great things about SMU as a place to go to school. That is the type of thing that we can build on.

Soory but I still don't see the MWC as any step backward. It hasn't hurt our home attendance and we're in a non-BCS conference either way. Womens hoops is doing well, baseball is top 25 and our mens bball program was bad in CUSA before it was bad in the MWC. As I've said before, I don't think it matters whether or not we're in the MWC or CUSA. Plus, the MWC looked pretty good in its bowl games (3-1) while CUSA really struggled.
