Women's basketball faces Rice, HoustonRice, Houston road games on deck for SMU women's hoops
Mustangs look to snap two-game winless streak Jan. 24, 2007 DALLAS (SMU) - It's a quick turn-around for the SMU women's basketball team after playing an afternoon game at Tulsa this past Sunday. The Mustangs (11-7, 3-3 C-USA) embark south for two games in Houston, beginning with a contest at Rice (10-9, 3-3 C-USA) Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Saturday matinee (2:00 p.m.) at Houston. Both games will be broadcast live on KKGM-Radio (1630AM). SMU has lost three of its last four games while Rice has won three of its last four games. The Mustangs are 2-4 on the road this season while the Owls are 7-1 at Autry Court, with their lone home loss to Marquette occurring on Dec. 3. Thursday marks the 56th meeting between SMU and Rice with the Mustangs holding a slim 28-27 edge over the Owls. Last season, the two teams met three times as SMU won its home game vs. Rice, but lost the road game as well as the Conference USA quarterfinal game to the Owls. Pony Tales... ** Under SMU head coach Rhonda Rompola, SMU is 16-18 vs. the Owls. ** Only 17.8% of SMU's field goals are from three-point range. At the close of last season, 23.2% of the Mustangs' field goals were from three-point range. ** Over this past summer, junior post Janielle Dodds worked on her outside shot and that work has paid off. Heading into this season, Dodds totaled a career mark 1-of-13 from three-point range. To date, she is 7-of-12 behind the three-point line (58.3%) this season alone. **This season, SMU is 3-2 when a Mustang records a double-double. ** SMU's floor general (junior guard Katy Cobb) returns to the starting line-up Thursday night. The Rio Vista, Texas, native has seen limited action the last four games due to a strained left calf. She did not play at Tulsa this past Sunday. Teammate Sharee Shepherd is still on the shelf with a sore back. She will not play in the next two games.
I don't know much about UH, but Rice has a good women's team -- always has. Knocked us out of the C-USA tournament last year, right?
Good luck in Houston, Ponies!
At least you're not YELLING ANY EITHER ![]() ![]() Sir, shooting-star, sir.

The hell they are. I was at the Rice game Thursday, and I'll be at the Cougar High game today. I'm bringing my family, and a couple of Houston-area SMU buddies (don't know their screen names) are coming with their families, too. I've seen a few games in Dallas this year, too.
Didn't I read that the Rice game was Cobb's first game back from a leg injury? She looked a little rusty, but the team definitely is more effective when she's in there running the point. Hopefully she'll shake soem more rust today and guide us back to the winning column. GO MUSTANGS!
That must've been a painful game to watch. Sir, shooting-star, sir.

Injuries and inexperience are killing us. We lost our only senior before the season started, and since then we've lost one more player for the year (Cole) and have been losing others for shorter periods. Basically what we're left with is 4 freshmen and a handful of upperclassmen who are fighting injuries.
