Sounds like material for our friend Letterman:
One is in Dallas and named after Doak Walker.
The other is in Waco and has Stretchface Jones going in?
There's no contest.

I'm thinking a good many people at both events would've attended both events.
Love him or hate him - Jerry Jones at the Doak Walker adds prestige.
I know, I know, did I just say that?
(Besides the Waco event dillutes media attention on the Doak Walker - no question.)

Aren't folks on this site often saying we need to the Cowboys involved with SMU football?

Adding Jerry would add financial clout, perhaps, but there's nothing prestigious about a living, breathing comic book character.

There were plenty of real cowboys at the Doak awards - Pearson, Dorsett, lee Roy Jordan, etc. Even jim McMahon who was funny - evne though ti snot forgiven for the Holiday bowl.

Nice event with Mustang Band music playing in the background. Could have done without the Pig Sooie thing but I guess that was to be expected given the recipient of the award.

Why would you automatically blame the Doak Walker Award people for the scheduling conflict? Maybe it was the Waco people who didn't check for conflicts.
From my experience, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame people are pretty clueless. On the other hand, the Doak Award banquet is probably the best-run event SMU does. It's first-class all the way. I would bet the Doak Award banquet was scheduled first.
I doubt there was much conflict to affect the turnout at either presentation. But both organizations need all the help they can get.
To me, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame is pretty rinky-dink compared to the Doak Award. My impression is, it's run by a bunch of Waco-area cronies. The Doak Walker is a legitimate, national award. Texas Sports Hall of Fame inductees are often picked based on how many tables they can sell.
