...I just felt like remembering all the memories I have of growing up a 'Mustang' (although I didn't attend SMU once I reached college age, I still return to the Hilltop whenever possible) and attending SMU football games at the Cotton Bowl, Texas Stadium, Ownby Stadium and now Ford Stadium. One of my first memories of an SMU game was seeing the contest against Navy in the Cotton Bowl in 1963 against QB Roger Staubach. What a game! How many people remember that this was one of two games played in the Cotton Bowl that day? Anyone remember the other game? (The answer is at the end of this post.)
Another great memory was the 1965 Homecoming game against UT. Final score: Mustangs 31, Longhorns 14! Glory, glory, glory! And this was when I was 'crowned' Mr. Mustang and got to ride to the game with the cheerleaders in a convertible '65 Mustang and sit on the sidelines with them and lead cheers! (My photo also appeared on the cover of the next issue of the Mustang alumni magazine being kissed on the cheek by one of the cheerleaders!)
My next 'great' memory is the Bluebonnet Bowl game against the Sooners in Houston. Another great 'come from behind' victory by the Mustangs.
And, of course, the first game in Ford Stadium against Kansas. I could go on and on. Mustang spirit is in my blood. My father was a 'yell leader' for the Mustangs in the late '40s and my mother also attended SMU. I love SMU and the Mustangs! And I appreciate the fact that my parents raised me in such a positive atmosphere as there exists on the Hilltop. I hope that parents of young people in Dallas and the surrounding areas will do what my parents did: take your kids and their friends to SMU athletic events and build a 'positive' foundation for their future through the Mustangs. I'm glad this forum exists for Mustang fans. It's going to be a fun ride this year. GO MUSTANGS! BEAT TEXAS TECH!
(The other game played in the Cotton Bowl on the same day as SMU v. Navy was the annual UT/OU shoot-out during the State Fair of Texas!)
