not a strength coach. used to be. and 1 inch makes a world of difference. And YES! Jost was that kind of guy! And YES! the only question about the record was how much was on there. close to 7 but i dont know for sure...and there were about 15 guys in there. Jost told him not to max again, and the kid told jost he was going to anyway. Jost got in a power struggle with the kid. Bottom line, 660 aint the record, and i think Vic did more then that also (but not sure, my tenure at smu was up before that)

but like i said, he is strong! Dont know how much of an athlete he is, guess time will tell.

Ahmad Hayes squatted over 800 lbs (mid 90s), broke the small bone in his lower leg doing it, not much of a player, but he was a squatting machine.

Several guys have done 600lbs.

Power clean (from the floor) most I saw was Swann at 405 or 410 lbs.

I am not sure what the most benched I ever saw was, I believe it was aorund 460 lb, not alot, but the least important of the 3 lifts.

what charlie did was unreal.... 1 inch off or not.. and im really amused by all of you throwing out these crazy numbers on squats... aparently smu should have a power lifting team not a football team. a good friend of mine set the SQUAT record at TEXAS A&M two years ago at 675... dont believe me here's the link: http://www.aggieathletics.com/pressRele ... ?PRID=7898

think about all of the players who have gone through A&M and all the players who have gone through SMU... I would be very suprised if any mustang ever through up over 700. But then again I heard larry allen benched 1000lbs... (which he hasn't, yet)

Don't forget that Pat Robertson leg pressed about 2000 lbs a while back!

I think Larry Allen has the biggest bench press amount I've heard of in sports, 700 pounds. I remember seeing the video back in the day...pretty impressive

you hear stories like this at a lot of small schools. every strength coach has his own standards and a record is really never a record. the only records that truely count in a strength program are test such as verticle, 40yd, 10yd, broad jump ect. But i also heard about a guy squating 800 at smu back in the day.....WOW! would have loved to see that....and it was bordano that hang cleaned 405....dont know what swan did

you cant bench or squat on a football field, but you do all the above.......

for the record..CHARLIE is a strong kid! wish him all the best! Vic will get him to his potential..then it is all up to charlie.

Charlie's squat was closer to perfect than your ability to spell parallel.

I'm going to have to say that on the O-Line, squat and bench far outweigh the 40, BJ and the VJ. I'm going to have to say that at fullback the same holds true. I also think it probably just as important on the D-Line, but agility is more key on the D line than the O.

Hmm, I also think kickers and punters rely more on cleans and squats than VJ, BJ and 40.

So, I'll say you make a sound argument -- but it was about 3 inches from parallel perfection.

Also, Richuel Massey and Foy Munlin both squatted in the 650-675 range.

SMU01-- it was ahmad hayes, not a gret football player but could squat the house, he was a powerlifter in high school and set the record at the time, north of 700lbs.

And obviously you weren't there, b/c Bordano had a bad back through (missed a year in a brace) college and was not able to clean after his second year. And I said power clean (hang clean is easier and not from the floor), and it was Swann who did 405 lbs.

What was impressive about Charlie's video is no knee wraps.

I know that earlier in the year Zach Thomas power cleaned 375 right when he walked in to door of summer training his freshman year and missed 400. So the upsides of the Strength program are going. For SMU01 to judge three inches when he wasn't there get a life!!!

i got a life! And sorry if your uneducated in the field. Viewing that video, it is easy to see that there is 2-3 inches above parrallel. An intern strength coach could see that.

"What you tolerate you encourage." There is a right way to do thing and a wrong way. That was a wrong squat.

BUT as i said before, GREAT FOR Charlie he is a strong kid. Hopefully he is a great player as well. Just remember your numbers in a weight room dont amount to jack squat on a field. Gotta be able to play the game. And im sure Charlie is a great player. About time some linemen (i think he is a linemen) have some lower body strength!

Lets just hope Charlie can focus on football and school, for about 10 more months. He has had a problem in the past, in both areas.

I just want to wish all players a great off season! Listen to vic, he understands what it takes in the off season. The number one aspect a strength coach should train, is a players mental toughness. Your mentality is the number one thing that influences you. VIC GETS THIS! Very few strength coaches understand this. All the science behind training, all the books, the lifts, the percentages is the easy part. getting kids to be confident and not believe they are the best, but just know they are the best without any doubt is the key.

push em vic! make them cry, sweat and bleed! teach them how to push threw their pain and fears and come out champs on the other side!!!!

Everyone in dallas should drop by Orsin's office and tell him thanks for not passing vic up just cause he is young. Then go down to the weight room and show vic how much support there is for him!!!!!!
