SMU Projects to 9 Bowls from 1950-1979

Postby Stallion » Tue Feb 27, 2007 10:25 pm

Ponyboy in his usual [deleted] rant trying to tie the entire history of SMU Football to the ineptitude of the last 18 years claimed SMU has always been mediocre. The two eras simply don't compare.

First, I dare anyone who wants to know the truth go check out the historical scores on ponyfans. SMU played a Batan Death March especially in the 50s and 60s but also in the 70s including multiple game series with Ohio St. Notre Dame, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma St., Georgia Tech, Navy in the Stabauch era, Oklahoma, USC, Maryland, Michigan, Oregon, Miami, Purdue, Georgia, Minnesota, Michigan St., Tennessee, Alabama, Penn St. West Virgina, California, Auburn, North Carolina St. among others plus a BCS level SWC schedule when even Rice and TCU had teams which were highly ranked. SMU didn't play any Schools of the Blind, Sam Houston St Monuments or Hillbilly States.

If SMU had been the present bowl environment SMU would have played in 9 bowl games during that era compared to ZERO since the DP. Take a look at just some of the teams SMU beat during that period:

1950 6-4 Georgia Tech, Ohio St., Missouri, Oklahoma St., Ark
1954 6-3-1 (Missouri, Kansas, UT(tie), A&M, Ark, TCU)
1958 6-4 (Missouri, Georgia Tech, UT, A&M, Bay, TCU)
1963 4-7* (Sun Bowl) SMU somehow got a bid due to beating No. 1 ranked Navy led by Staubach but also beat Ark, A&M and Air Force
1966 8-3 (Cotton Bowl) (Illinois, Navy, Tech, UT, A&M, Bay, TCU)
1968 8-3 (Bluebonnett Bowl) (Auburn, NCSU, TCU, Tech, A&M, Bay, OU)
1972 7-4 (Wake Forest, Florida, Ark, Bay, TCU)
1973 6-4-1 (Oregon St., Virgina Tech, Ark(tie), Bay, TCU)
1974 6-4-1 (Virgina Tech, Oregon St., TCU, A&M, Ark(tie)

In non-bowl years SMU beat Notre Dame in 1951 and 1956. There is no similarity in SMU's competitiveness during this era and today.

you are really upset with his post... i found the 4-7 the most iteresting of them all, and i guess the only argument i could make is that the level of competition ahas chaged and there is a more level playing field among all the teams, but that doesnt even make sense...

Sorry, but we are not the same squad prior to 1987. Comparisons to such are irreverent. Since I am a student of the second year back that is all I know. I went to SMU for the academics and the beautiful campus. I donate to the Mustang Club but more the the general fund .

Oops. Just saw this and had to reply. Then I'll shut up for fear of bashing.

We were in a major conference, so it's not surprising to hear that we played teams from major conferences. And I've already admitted that our 42% win percentage in the SWC from 1950 to 1979 is better than our 35% win percentage at the mid-major level since 1996. But a 42% win percentage makes us a less than average major. End of story. Next subject.

Not so, flunk out statistics major :!:

You're merely giving us our score on the test. You
have to rank us among our SWC opponents scores to
declare us below average on the bell curve from 50 - 79.

Why are you so quick to bad mouth us as mediocre, and
below average when you say you're not for bashing us :?:
