Re: Those who come to the games should decide

Sam I Am wrote:Since someone has tried to turn the uniform design debate into a generational gap issue, then let's have the people who go to the games decide what to wear. In that case the students will have the least to say about it because they don't attend. Perhaps the ones who have seen the most games have the best persepctive about what looks good since they have seen it all.
well if that is the case... it would be the players... an if you are going to say it should be someone who seen the most games in their lifetime, we could be running around in leather helmets next year... move out of the past... i dont care how much money you give... i'll sell you my blue jersey and white helmet if you want, but the new look is better then what we had when i was there

Back to the future, little dude

Players come and go, but the school always remains. SMU needs icons not trendy fashion. What uniform did they wear in your day compared to the one you like, little dude?

I also agree that along with uniform colors needs to go a uniform logo, i.e. the traditional mustang logo, not the curvy SMU abomination.

What I have seen is a return to the classic block lettering and pony from the university standpoint. Who knows what the unis will have on them........

We'll let the players choose the unis when they go to a bowl. What's wrong with my polo anyway?

Changing uniforms and colors is kind of like changing your mascot or team name. Schools have done one or the other - Stanford, Marquette, William and Mary have changed their team names from Indians or Warriors to other things. Georgetown experimented briefly with a different color scheme than navy and gray. Maryland has three colors (based upon the Maryland state flag) and seems to change periodically between the three (gold, red and black). A lot of schools change uniforms periodically, Wake Forest, UVA, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and Florida come to mind. Others stay with tradition, Navy, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State, UT, A&M, Arkansas, Delaware come to mind. The question is whether we want to have a brand that stands out, or whether its a changing brand. Do we want to be like some corporations who keep their brands the same forever (Kraft, Nabisco, Marlboro)? Or do we want to be like some corporations who change their logos and image periodically (Coca Cola)? It comes down to marketing and what you want to project. Stability or trendy.

Do not include Arkansas in the non changers. They have evolved from a deep crimson, almost burgandy, to a bright cardinal red. There is a lot of discussion among the faithfuls as to what the color should be.

I think our colors / scheme is more akin to the NY Giants...

The Giants thing is probably because YA Tittle is from Marshall, home of PB.

you know it would be one thing not to change our look if we had this amazing history, but the new mustangs need a new look... get over the past in take on an image of their own... not saying that we should forget about where we've been, i just like the new unis, and think they make a statement about an up and coming program

Making a statement

Postby Sam I Am » Thu Mar 15, 2007 2:06 pm

The 22 years without a title makes quite a statement about the team. If we are going to blot out our past, how many different uniform designs would we have to discard, including last year's?

Dream of all Dreams

Postby Topper » Sat Mar 24, 2007 7:16 pm

I had the weirdest dream: The NCAA went to a playoff system. SMU won CUSA with an 8-3 regular season and were invited to a sweet 16 type tournament. Wound up in the National Championship game in the Superdome against the Arizona Wildcats. ( Now you know its a dream). Result: SMU 29-Arizona-16. Oh, and strangest of all: We were wearing the Dave Smith era uniforms.
