I still remember what a big stiff Koncak was when he arrived at SMU. He had to go up against a very talented and athletic Joe Klein at Arkansas and a very athletic (but raw) Akeem Olajuwon at Houston. Those other guys were far more athletic than Koncak, but as they say...you can't coach size. Koncak was listed that year at 6-9 but towered over those other guys who were listed as 6-10 and 6-11. Bottom line is that he held his own with them. Doherty will now have a pair of 7 footers to work with and it will be nice to have 10 fouls to work with in the low post
Unfortunately, (or fortunately?) he won't have nearly as many openings available as he has had this year.
Well we still have 1 scholarship left for this season. Then next year we should have 4 more when Roberts, Dez, Killen, and Ritter graduate. Or does Ritter have another year or is he not even on scholarship at all?
Heh, well for starters it is not really a reference so much to Womack but to a famous sign back in the Cotton Bowl. I got it from a mysterious sign painted on a sheet that always showed up for SMU games with that slogan on it, it even got mentions in the DMN and a couple of other media outlets due to its strange nature......first of all Womack was never a heisman contender and secondly SMU didn't even run the wishbone.....but there it was every game and it grew on people. Thought it was a good analogy of SMU Athletics....Doesn't really make sense but we love it anyway ![]() I say it stays! Womack + Wishbone = Heisman
Class of 89
Well Koncak may have been a stiff as a freshman but he had enough skills to average almost 30 points and over 10 rebounds per game as a senior in high school. Koncak was not a complete project in the sense of his offensive and defensive skills as he was a project in physical development and coordinating his quickly growing frame. He was in that sense the opposite of Bamba Falls who is athletic and coordinated but doesn't have the offensive skills of Koncak or the bulk to defend the better offensive players. Koncak improved more between his freshman and sophmore years than any player in SMU History. Bamba Fall has essentially mastered only one aspect of the game-shot blocking.
