This Time Next Year

Postby DiamondM » Thu Mar 15, 2007 2:27 pm

Just got back from watching Texas Tech lose to BC over a long lunch. My husband was there with some buddies, one of which said to me, "just think, next year you'll have to take time off Thursday to watch Duke, and on Friday to watch SMU."

Can't wait.

It's a nice thought. We'd better have a "fab five" type freshman class.

seriously why do some insist upon these unrealistic expectations. 4-5 year rebuilding project to contend for championships. We hit bottom next year. I know I'm just being negative but who warned two years ago that half the players on scholarship were questionable Division 1A players and the talent trend was downward at the time of Dement's firing and after Tubbs first year? The good news is I can't make that statement about Doherty's class-at least 6 seem to be legitimate mid level Division 1A prospects plus he has seen wisdom in strongly pursuing Prep School players. The talent level is clearly trending higher. Long shot possibility of NIT in Doherty's 3rd year if Bamba reaches his long term potential is about the best that a rational fan could expect.

There's a staggering newsflash - what are the odds of that happening?

As memory serves, you said at the time that Bamba Fall was two or three years from "contributing" (because he was such a project), yet he has set the freshman and sophomore records for blocks, led the conference in blocks, made first-team all-defensive team and has shown signs - yes, only signs so far - of developing offensively, sparking comments by people in the coaching industry to talk about him as a future professional player.

Huh? Wasn't it 48 hours ago or so that you were dismissing this class as less significant than the Sasser/Davis/Elsey class because "three-star players are a dime a dozen"? Now they're suddenly a mark of improved recruiting? Which is it?

Thank goodness he found your notes that you included with your Mustang Club donations.

Your not a very good reader. I said Bamba Fall is a 2-3 year long term project-a term of art in the recruiting world and guess what - he is and really has a long way to go to even come close to reaching his potential. This was almost a universal opinion of every source of scouts you can find on the internet. I said then and still think he was well worth the gamble. The "contributing'' additions to my comments are typical attempts to discredit my comments by the same old posters on here. What the hell does contributing mean anyway-I'm talking about building a Championship and NCAA Tourney team. Fall's development certainly has not reached the point where he could contribute to a Championship or NCAA Tourney team except for being a shot blocker. The context of my comments had to do with whether SMU should have signed some JC transfer big men - in addition to Fall not instead of Fall-to help the team during the last two years because that was an obvious weakness.

As for the "dime a dozen" comment-I never referred to SMU's recruits as a "dime a dozen". I've said Doherty has done a great job with this class under the circumstances. I said 3 star recruits aren't that hard to find in BB in comparison to football. A majority of SMU's BB recruits over the last 10-12 years would have been classified as 3 stars and SMU really hasn't done much with them. About a 1/4 to a 1/5th of SMU's FB recruits have been classified a 3 star types(the systems have changed over the years). I'm just pointing out that there is a differences in what a 3 star means in FB and BB. Its really quite obvious to anyone who follows these services.

I generally think this is a very good class that Doherty can build on-I don't think its a Top 25 or a Top 35 because I don't think there are enough polished superstars who can step in immediately and excell at Division 1A level. I think they will be fun to watch next year but they will struggle. However, I could see this group making SMU a very competitive program with 11 out of the 12 teams in CUSA by their Junior years. Right now the quality of players Memphis is getting is head and shoulders above the rest. In the last 3 years Memphis has signed 10 players-2 Five Stars, 7 Four Stars and only one 1 Three star. I have long advocated SMU expanding the recruiting pool by going after Prep School kids and JUCOs. It still appears to be difficult to get the JUCOs in so at least we seem to be able to get quality Prep School kids in with 4 Prep recruits either committed or signed. I have led the parade for expanding that talent pool.
