Concerns...

Postby tmustangp » Sun Mar 18, 2007 9:11 pm

Ok first let me start w/ the fact that I am very very pleased w/ our 7 committs that are coming next year... Again I am very very pleased, now onto my point..

Yes it is early to say this, but Doherty has now gone through two recruiting seasons and how many dallas kids have we landed? Yes ZERO, does this concern anyone else but me? Am I crazy to think that there is enough talent in dallas every year that if we landed just one or two a year we could be a tournament team?

Now if we make the tournament w/out any dallas kids, I will still be ecstatic trust me.. But we only have two dallas kids right now, Killen and Dez (tubb's guys) and apparently Doherty has reached out to the Dallas community... Is this a marketing ploy? is his out of area/state talent better?
Wouldn't recruiting dallas kids help w/ attendence even if we are just over 500? Is he slowly building a foundation that we don't know about to land the studs at Duncanville or other Dallas schools?

Tell me what yall think or hopefully know.

Tmustangp...if you're going to include Killen as a dallas player (he's form arlington), then you should include Nyakundi (arlington) and malone (mansfield). I'd like to see some Dallas-area players, not necessarily just in Dallas. I would've loved to have gotten Roberson from Plano, for instance.

Everyone and thier mothers are recruiting Dallas (DISD) kids. These kids don't know beans about who Coach Doh is or what he is capable of doing at this point in time (they are just kids and they look at the big time schools). We have to recruit against UT, A&M, Okie State, OU, etc. ...all BCS schools with lots of TV time. Give Coach Doh some time to build a program with high national visibility, i.e., NIT and NCAA success and these Dallas kids will start giving SMU some good looks. Almost every Dallas kid thinks he is headed to the NBA and wants to go where he can showcase his talents. Until we start to gain national recognition it will be a hard sell to the Dallas kids. Meanwhile, Coach Doh knows how to recruit talent and if it means going outside the immediate area for good players, so be it. Once SMU becomes a player again on the national scene, recruiting talent, whether local or national will become much easier.

This is what happens when you sack one of DISD's own for burgers and Cheer. The first order of biz when Doherty got here was to attempt to rebuild those bridges. I guess they're not quite finished yet.

I think another effective approach for Doh would be to sit back and watch where those DISD blue chippers go. As he builds his program, contact the KUs or the Okie States who sign the kids out of Dallas, and offer them a chance to come on back down and let those kids play back at home. This is the same approach that saw Tennessee's women come play at TCU.

If at the same time Doh is successful in accomplishing what he wants to, winning those games against KU or whomever at home will help his Dallas recruiting as well as the home fan base.

I think that's a NCAA violation...

Except we all know the KU's of the world (Kentucky and Kansas) don't play road games OOC. They might play on a neutral court now and then. They can feast on the little sisters of the poor and play some tougher OOC games at home against MVC teams or MAC teams. Nice concept, but I don't see them coming here if there is any reasonable liklihood that they might lose to us. We're still more likely to get A&M or UT at AA. JMHO

And Tubbs' record recruiting top DISD talent when he was head coach here was so outstanding?

Tubb's DISD buddies basically left him hanging out to dry. With friends like that, who needs enemies? They helped him get his dream job, but didn't do much to help him keep it... or maybe there wasn't much they could do to persuade the kids to give SMU and Tubbs a good look.

This thread is lame.

I'm in favor as I think most people on this board of Doherty getting the best recruits he possibly can get from any part of the country or state.

IF Doherty starts winning the bluechip Dallas baller will notice.

FYI...Kevin Durant is from the DC area. I'm sure the Longhorn faithful were pissed that Barnes gave him a scholarship over a guy from TX.
