SMU mentioned on ESPN

On espn they were talking to Digger Phelps about losing in the first round of the tournament at Notre Dame and they mentioned SMU.. I think they said '86 or '87, i cannot remember... Is this accurate, I know Konkack and Bliss were there at that time, but did we win a conf championship? or were we invited to the big dance back then?

Koncack was not there it was all about Cato Armstrong, carlton McKinney, terry Long Todd Alexander Eric Longino! O yeah we beat the Irish on St. Patrick's day and played a really good Duke team to miss the sweet 16. The year March 1987!

We beat NC state and if any of us would had known about Jimmy V, we wouldn't have been so brutal behind his bench!

It was the 87-88 season, and we were SWC Champs with a 28-7 record.
The NC State game was at Moody, something like 57-56? I think that was in Shumate's first season.

Wasn't Puddy also on that team?

The North Carolina State game was during the 88-89 season (12-3). This was John Shumate's first year. Glenn Puddy was on both the 87-88 and 88-89 teams. Kato averaged 17.3 in 86-87, 16.1 in 87-88 and 19.9 in 88-89.

SMU 59, NC State 58.

I don't think I've ever seen the campus so alive after a sporting event.

I thought Dave Bliss was still the coach of the 1987-1998 SWC Championship team.

We got a #7 Seed in the tournament that year and beat Notre Dame in the first round on St. Patrick's Day, 83-75. We then lost to #2 seed Duke 94-79 in the second round.

That year we also beat Florida in the regular season, in a game that was at Reunion Arena, 82-76. I think Florida was ranked about #5 in the nation at that time.

The NC State game was the next season (1988-1989) - that was Shumate's first season.

4 correct answers. Thanks for getting all that down so I didn't have to rack my brain. And, yes, Florida was #5 that year.

Cool thing about the ND game was that the ACC fans were cheering for us that night. Things were a bit different two days later. And, if anybody wants to know why I hate Duke to this day, see score above.

Dude, I was there behind that bench that night and I still feel bad about the hell I gave Valvano. I don't even know if brutal best describes it. Why did we hate him so much?

I was perusing an Arkansas message board reading up on the expected fate of Stan Heath and saw where someone had posted a site listing the top 100 Basketball programs of all time. I was surprised to see Arkansas at #8, but even more surprised (pleasantly) to see SMU #71. Not bad for an "all time" listing considering how many down years we have had. Wish I had the ability to post a link and I would let you see it, but alas, I am just too old and stoopid.
