SMU adds second recruit this week...

Matt Doherty and his SMU staff have dipped into the prep school ranks to add a second recruit this week in 6-foot 5 combo guard Bennie Rhodes...

We caught up with Durham, NC Mount Zion Head Coach Antonio Fozard and he confirmed the fact that his 6-foot 5 combo guard Bennie Rhodes has committed to SMU.

"Yes, Bennie committed to SMU this week," Coach Fozard told Hoopmasters. "They were on him for quite a while, and he just formed a deeper relationship with Coach Doherty, than the other coaches. He was more comfortable with the SMU staff and team."

Rhodes averaged 14 points and just over 5 assists a game for Mount Zion. He is a versatile player who can score from beyond the arc or off the dribble. he is an excellent passer who can lead break or fill a lane. His versatility is his biggest strength.

He chose SMU over interest from Kansas, Clemson, Washington State, and Kansas State.

14 ppg on this Mt Zion team would have to be considerd pretty impressive I would think. I found that including Rhodes, Mt. Zion has 4 current seniors with offers to D1 programs. One of them being a 4 star PF going to NC State, another kid getting interest from lower level D1 schools, and finally a 6ft SG averaging 20ppg with offers to ECU and a couple other places along with interest from some pretty good programs. That mind you is just their current Senior class being that I didn't dig deep to see what quality Juniors they have. Mt. Zion also plays a pretty difficult level of competition I would assume (noticed they got trounced by Oak Hill and have lost to South Kent twice). Plus averaging 5+ assists per game I would have to imagine Rhodes is doing a decent amount of distributing too. With all that said, I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to think he would have averaged 20+ ppg at "Also Ran 5a Highschool" here in Texas. Maybe I am overestimating Mt. Zion (who on the year was 21-23 from what I read) but I am pretty excited about Rhodes's potential.
