2008 OG Recruit Sam Schwartzstein

Postby Ponymon » Tue Mar 27, 2007 10:32 pm

No offers yet, but the Southlake Carroll 6-3, 257 lb. prospect has SMU at the top of his list and we have been showing increased interest in him by the day, according to Rivals.

So far, he's taken some trips to schools such as Oklahoma and Rice. He's also been receiving attention from Colorado, Vanderbilt, Kansas, and Iowa to name a few as well as SMU.

I don't know if this kid can play or not -- if he plays for Carroll HS, he certainly is well-coached -- but I'm hoping the days of recruiting linemen in the 250s and 260s are a thing of the distant past (barring the emergence of a still-growing, can't-miss genetic freak).

nothing wrong with a junior who's 257 if they have a big enough frame. hopefully he'd put another 10 lbs on next year so he'd be 267-270ish entering his freshman year. he'd be right on target to be a 300+ pounder by his junior. i'm guessing at 6'3", he better have a pretty wide frame to add the weight w/o it being all fat

I think you are being a little too general here. Guards and Centers who can actually move coming out of highschool at 260lbs are fine by me. Remember that Centers in college play between 275 and 290 and one that can move at 290lbs is looking at being an NFL prospect. There are plenty of big lumbering 300+lb Guards but just as many in the 285-300 range. If you were to think this guy might put on 5-10 lbs during his Senior season in college and another 15 in his redshirt year he is all the sudden 280+ as a redshirt freshman.

As of last season I think Enright was in the 270-275 range and PB raves about him. Poynter and Paveto were our co-lineman of the year and played at what, 290 or so last season as upperclassmen? Then again, our line wasn't exactly stellar, so maybe you are right that we don't need anymore 260lb OL recruits.

well, the big boys (your UT's) recruit linemen that are already in the 300's and can move, they're not always going to be out there for us to pick. We have to take a lot more chances on guys that aren't there yet (think Justin Rogers or our new OL recruit from Mexia I believe) and hope they can project to the next level, there's nothing wrong with that, but there'll be some hits and misses along the way
