Officials: Gillispie will remain head coach at A&M
By JOHN P. LOPEZ Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle TOOLS Email Get section feed Print Subscribe NOW RESOURCES Post your take on Gillispie, A&M Texas A&M basketball coach Billy Gillispie will remain head coach of the basketball program he has turned into a national power, three high-ranking officials close to and within the A&M system have confirmed. Gillispie apparently will receive a new contract that will pay him in the neighborhood of $2 million a year, guarantees added to the deal that runs through 2012 and construction on the new A&M basketball facility will begin on Monday. "The fence will go up (at the construction site) and they'll get it rolling," one official said of the 50,000-square-foot, $20 million facility that will include practice areas for men's and women's basketball, offices and training areas. After several meetings with A&M athletic director Bill Byrne, Gillispie received notice today that the A&M Board of Regents will rubber-stamp the contract and expedite the start of construction on the facility. Gillispie privately has given Byrne assurances that he will not accept an offer from the University of Arkansas to replace fired coach Stan Heath, nor will he pursue any other available job openings. The announcement should become official after the A&M regents meet Thursday and Friday. Delays in the start of construction for the facility arrived after one of the lead architects died, and because of turnover in the A&M system facility construction administration. The A&M regents also are expected to approve general contractor SpawGlass as the new construction manager for the project and has received assurances that the facility will be completed on time. In three seasons at A&M, Gillispie has compiled a record of 70-26, carrying the once-lowly program to an NIT bid his first season and back-to-back berths in the NCAA Tournament the past two years, including an appearance in the Sweet 16 this season.
I am constantly amazed at how the system works. Broyles has never spoken to Gillispie but rather communicated his deal with Doc Sadler of Nebraska, a former Arkansas Assistant and now a possible candidate. The offer was made to BG from Sadler from Broyles. I guess this way, Broyles can say he was never directly turned down although he has made it clear an offer was submitted.
The way it is reported down here is that they broke ground on a new practice facility right after BG came as part of the hiring enticement. Since that time, not another shovel of dirt has been turned other than the initial photo session and in the mean time several new FB facilities have been started and/or built. Along with the money, this appears to be a significant matter of negotiation with BG and the A&M Regents. It is funny how all of a sudden they can immediately begin work on a project that has sat dormant for 3 years. BTW, some people here say that BG said if an answer was needed right now it was no but if Broyles could wait unitl Friday or Saturday he may decide on UA. I believe that is blowing smoke by disappointed Arkies but you never know. It is just fun to sit back and watch and listen.
Ok, but the place the currently play in opened in 1998. Are they just building practice facilities or a whole new arean?

Practice for now. Supposedly the arena is used for all kind of events and BG would like a new sparkly one just for BB but who knows with the FB powers grabbing first.

Reed Arena already has a practice facility too, and as far as I can tell it is only used for Men's and Women's bball! The donkey's name is Kiki.

Come on now Abe and Kiki. I am dealing with Arkansas news media and irate Arkansas message boards. All you are armed with is the facts. Does not seem like a fair fight to me. Your facts are getting in the way of what is being reported here. Leave my stories alone. They sound much better than the truth.
Seriously, I know nothing about the facilities except what is being reported here which appears to be as wrong as the 99% chance BG is going to Arkansas.
I'm not trying to discount what you are saying. I am just appalled that after building a new arena in 1998 with practice facilities TAMU now thinks they need an additional facility exclusively for basketball. What does BG think is wrong with the old one? Does he want his own arena that he won't have to share with women's bball? TAMUs got plenty of money though, they have also recently built an arena exclusively for women's equestrian.
