UTEP Gets 2008 National Top 100...from our backyard. Power Forward 6-8,225 Will Brown from Duncanville-(actually I forgot he was at Woodrow last year and transferred to Duncanville for next year). Rated No. 93 by Rivals-much higher by other services(No. 35 by Prepstars and No. 73 by HoopScoop). Rated 4 stars by Rivals. As you may know Duncanville was a the undefeated Texas 5A Champion this year and went 40-0. He had SMU on his long list. Too bad-this kid was apparently taking advanced placement types of courses at Woodrow so he probably is a pretty decent student that could have made it into SMU without any problem.
We probably have 4 ships for next year. I wonder how serious our interest was in this guy and if Doh has bigger fish in mind.
hmm, there's not a whole lot bigger is there? Especially that's been considering SMU
Dallas Mavericks - 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!
Long live the Circle of Champions!
Would be nice to get a player like this, but I really hope Doh is looking at some quality PGs. The class he signed this year appears to have some quality big men in it. Not sure how good Walker is going to be so it would be great to get a 4 star PG in next years class.
It would be nice to get a 4 star PG next year???? LOL We have only had TWO 4 star players (Hop and Willingham) regardless of position in the last ten years at SMU. While you're at it, go ahead and request us a 4 star wing guard, small forward, power forward and center.
And I giggle every time I read that SMU might not have had interest in a player, especially a national top 100 talent such as Brown, as soon as they commit to another school. My guess is they choose other schools because they want a legit chance at winning, not because we lack interest.
It's clowns like you that make me giggle. I don't expect things to be the way they have been the last 10 years. I don't expect Doh to be recruiting from the bottom of the barrel and left overs. I expect him to go for the type of players we need to move the program forward and reach the goals Orsini and the rest of us have set. He did a great job of doing that this year and I see no reason why he can't continue to do it in the future. With your attitude, you need to get on the Froggie board and do your giggling over there.
I can tell you for a fact SMU had Will Brown on our radar. But so did A & M, Baylor, Houston, TCU etc. All were looking at him and, yes, I saw our coaches at several games last summer. Will i s a good athlete that is learning basketball and will get better in time. However, while we were looking at Will...he has a ways to go in the basketball world.
Coach Doherty is on the trail of much better players. Trust me on this one. I know all because I actually watched Will play for the Dallas Heroes AAU team all last summer. Good luck, Will. SMU...2nd to None
Stallion, your comment surprises me. From the tone and content of some of your posts, I had gotten the impression you thought Doh was heading the program in the right direction.
I think he's doing fine but I intensely dislike silly comments like Don't worry-be happy-SMU is recruiting players much better than the 4 star we just lost. Please don't insult our intelligence. These are the same people claiming SMU had a Top 35 class despite the fact none of the players are rated in the Top 150 players in the country. How exactly do you have a Top National Class without getting the top National players? Much more likely than not Will Brown would have been better than any recruit we end up with. Not the end of the world-move on and go find someone-but again drop the [deleted] cheerleading. While we're at it drop the BS about going to the NIT next year and the NCAAs the next year. It ain't going to be pretty next year when we play real BB teams.
Still no mention of SMU but.... per the dmn: April 7, 2007 Duncanville's Brown not committed to UTEP Contrary to newspaper reports and blogs, Duncanville center Will Brown has not committed to UT-El Paso. Brown, a 6-9 transfer from Woodrow Wilson, was reported on Thursday to have orally committed to play for the Miners. But Brown’s father, Benny, said the reports were fabricated. “I don’t know where that came from,†Benny Brown said. “He's going to make visits before we make that decision. I want him to have some fun and see some of these schools first before he commits.†Brown is considering UTEP, but he also wants to look at several other schools, including Georgia, Wake Forest, Nebraska and two-time national champion Florida. He averaged 11.3 points and 8.6 rebounds at Woodrow last season. Brown is ranked No. 93 nationally by Rivals.com and No. 7 in the state by TexasHoops.com in the Class of 2008 top players list.
