expony18I agree that the fight was not necessarily a bad thing, but when it is posted on the internet it becomes a bad thing. Incidents such as this should stay in the meeting room. It is nobody's business but the Mustang players and coaches. Please take this into consideration in your future posts.
Re: expony18
But somebody wants to be sure to let others know they are "inside" and will post internal stuff for their own benefit.
Re: expony18half the stuff posted on here is complete [deleted] anyways, even when it's from a "reliable" source... If you dont like whats posted dont read it and dont respond to it... fact is, there are a lot of current players and ex-players who post on here, so there can actually be some insight on whats taking place with the team. if you want to speculate and guess about whats really going on, then go for it. if the moderators dont like this thread they can delete it. the whole reason i started this thread (which i questioned before i did it) was to prove a point about PB's guys and them believing in him, and also a change in attitude from teams in the past (i know jt will probably comment on this)... these guys are sick of losing and sick of other guys slacking off... the majority of these players have bought into PB's message (although most of our "fans" have not), and are making a point that you are either with us or your not... As for this thread im done posting... WEST DIVISION CHAMPS 2010
Actually the only comments I can think of on this subject are I am completely unimpressed by locker room scuffles and I hope that teh same agression shows up on the field come gameday and there's enough of it to translate to a win or two. That remains to be seen.
While I didn't read most of this thread, expony is right. The fact that Muse got so fired up and so passionate over this team is a testament to how hungry they are. Muse was probably here when we were 0-12, so he knows the low point of this program. This team should be fired up and ready to use that aggression on the field next year and whoop their way to the C-USA championship game and a bowl. Bring on Labor Day!
I really don't get the the argument about what a great coach this proves Phil Bennett to be. These are all his players-both key combatants are going to be Seniors, have played since freshman and have been a big part of the program for over 3 years. Bennett's entering his 6th season. You would think everybody would be on board with what Phil Bennett wanted after Bennett's first year 5 years ago. Isn't that what a Coach is supposed to do as Job 1 in building a foundation of the program? Shouldn't he have made Jimmy Johnson's point about "going to play on the asthma field" by now. That's what Bear Bryant's little trip to Junction Texas was all about. Matt Doherty was obviously testing the mettle and commitment of his players this year. Ron Meyer and every other good coach got the attention of his players in YEAR 1. I wouldn't make too much about the situation-it happens every year on every team-but if anything I'd say its a poor reflection of Phil Bennett when reported team leaders aren't on board in a Coaches 6th year. Now if this was an issue concerning a freshman or transfer it would be different-you'd expect team leaders to set the player straight. Sounds to me that some of Phil Bennett's players are on-board and others aren't. We heard insinuations of the same thing about Chris Phillips in the past. These are ALL Phil Bennett's players and if he can't motivate them then it is HIS responsibility. When a player fails to develop, not only the player is to blame because it is part of the Coaches' duty to find a way to get the most out all his players or send them down the road.,
Re: expony18
Actually didn't read much of it and skipped through most. Got you comment about how someone didn't know the players as well as you and some other poster do though and saw this post. After 6 years of bennett it is about time players are sick of losing and glad you think a DE taking on a DB will resolve the issue. Personally I think it is a bunch of BS and if they are at each other in Spring guess what baby, they ain't coming together in August. Too much too late, but glad to see you a proud papa in all this trash. Bottom line is I thought a lot of the SMU program and really discussed it with one of the recruits before he signed. If I knew this sheet was going on I'd have told him to run away as fast as you can and the kids fast. Good luck to you and you buddies.
Your last post trumps any stupidity directed at this thread by a mile.
The team won't come together in August because of a scuffle between 2 players in the spring?! Wow. This exact same thing happened last summer and the team didn't fall apart. If you think that a recruit is better off somewhere else, get a damn clue. This happens everywhere: Pee-wee, Jr. High, High school, College and in the NFL.
I'm not impressed by fighting or the lack of. Kids respond differently to the responsibilities of leadership...Muse a Senior Leader. I know kids are all different...and mine didn't always show up on time but always had a reason. Back grounds and many feelings guide our kids and they respond differently. 80 kids plus and you will have some who may come up short on discipline but will shine after getting to the big dance. Boys fight, forget and play together...I have been there and so have my boys. Too much attention has been given to this incident...I feel.....Go Mustangs!!
Maybe I am overly negative, but I view this poorly. Bennett doesn't have enough a handle on his team that stuff like missing meetings and fights during meetings happen. I mean, sure. Good for Muse to give a [deleted]; bad for McCray for not giving a [deleted], but what does this say about Bennett's control of this team. This is a respect issue and it speaks poorly of the coach.
I think we have all blown this out of proportion. Did Muse stand there for 15 minutes punching him out while Bennett shook his head saying "what am I to do, what am I to do". Or did Muse confront McCray, throw a punch either in anger or self defense and Bennett immediately stop the ruckus. Or somewhere in between. I think Mr. Rogers ( Justin's dad not the slipper guy) said it best when he said some things should just stay in the meeting room. How can anyone say Bennett has lost control without any of us knowing how Bennett controlled the situation? Probably time for us to move on to more important things like whether frisbees and bean bags will still be allowed on the bouldvard, and if so can we bring our own or do we have to rent them from the Athletic Department?
