According to Rivals, SMU has offered all of 5 prospects so far, 3 of whom have accepted offers at other schools. The offers are to:
QB Riley Dodge, Southlake, Texas (committed to Texas)
QB Tommy Dorman, North Richland Hills, Texas (committed to A$M)
RB Harrison Jeffers, Lawton, Okla. (committed to Tech)
S Cody Davis, Stephenville, Texas
Athlete Cornelius Douglas, Lawton Okla.
Of course, we know that the big boys will get theirs first as demonstrated by Texas, which already has at least 17 recruits committed. A good comparison for us, however, seems to be Tulsa. By contrast, Tulsa has already offered 21 recruits and have obtained 2 commitments so far (RB Marcus Wright, San Antonio, TX, and OT Taylor Davis, Plano, TX).
I don't know how accurate the Rival's list is as to the actual number of offers that SMU has made. We might be offering kids that have not shown enough yet to make it into the Rival's database. It would be interesting to hear the strategy and philosophy that we are pursuing to try and obtain signatures for the upcoming 2008 class. It seems to me that to get the best you have to at least show you are interested! (Or maybe we are still celebrating the signings of the 2007 class. If that's the case, its too bad the competition doesn't seem to subscribe to that philosophy!)

I know for a fact that interest is being shown.... as you also know. We have offered the 5 that you write about.
There have been calls and letters sent out too. This group is NOT Cavan. They work hard to shake every shurb and look under every rock.

Mike Cavan was a better recruiter than anybody on this staff. He has the skins on the wall to prove it. Too bad SMU had him recruiting about 50% of the availiable talent and with one hand tied behind his back.

If that's what you really believe, you must be related to Cavan, or owe him money.

I don't know about Mike's ability vs. Phil's in the recruiting department, but it's absolutely true that Cavan pulled in our best classes post SWC for two years. Then the Malin thing came down and we cooled off to put it lightly. But the myth that Cavan couldn't bring in the players is simply false and I'm still a strong Bennett supporter.
This coming season is our most important in years. We turn the corner and go bowl and we may finally get that momentum we've all been waiting for. If we pass the test this coming year, look for a big recruiting season in 2008, renewal of faith in Phil Bennett, and bluer skies ahead.

And if not........it will be how many more years of "rebuilding"?

What does it say when a terrible coach has the best record at SMU during the last 17 years. Phil Bennett has every advantage that Rossley, Cavan and Gregg did not. Easiest schedule in SMU History and can't get the job done because he can't beat Rice OR North Texas. He's lucky to get a second chance. He will not get a third chance. Mike Cavan very likely would have gone to at least 2 and probably 3 bowls if the schedules were reversed. Bennett might have won 3-4 games playing the schedules Cavan played during those. Don't even open your mouths unless you go back and check the schedules.

I'm not saying Bennett is a better coach, I'm not saying Cavan is not the best post DP coach. I'm not saying Bennett should get a free pass on last year, and he won't. If he doesn't perform and win, then he's gone. But Cavan still lost winnable games against beatable opponents, and the team went into decline and he was fired. He has his faults, we all know our current coach does as well. But personally, I don't blame anyone but the coach and the players losing to a 1-10 TCU, a 3-8 Rice, a 6-5 Rice, or North Texas ever.
