SMU Offers 2008 JC QB Kale Pick (sic)CORRECTON: AS DISCUSSED BELOW-IT TURNS OUT PICK IS FROM DODGE CITY HIGH SCHOOL NOT DODGE CITY JUNIOR COLLEGE
from Dodge City JC in Kansas. Offers frm Iowa St(high), Kansas(high), SMU and Colorado St. Interest from KSU, Missouri, Nebraska, and others. He is 6-1, 185 4.7 He was 105 completions on 190 attemps 55% and 1,779 yards, 19 TDs and 5 Ints. Not a real strong show of support for our young QBs. I would think that he would be a real real longshot for SMU unless these others schools back off because he would be the same class-junior - as Willis and might never get a shot. But apparently SMU offered within the last week based upon his own quote so this appears to be current info. The coaching staff isn't secretly concerned about Willis' hand injury Are they? Kinda makes you shake your head because this should be the class you go young and try to develop-guess they have already committed elsewhere.
and this would continue our wonderful luck with the Quarterback position if his hand really is that bad
Perhaps this has more to do with having an experienced JUCO QB in 2008 to compete for the number 2 position. May have nothing to do with Willis at all.
Having a back-up that has played a down was what I was thinking too.
Willis will miss a play or two. If the game is on the line, put in the JUCO for stability. If the game is pretty much over, put in a young guy for practice. Go Bennett. Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
We start out with a bunch of WRs, and now we are down considerably off that total due to injury, illness, "retirement", and position changes.
Can't have enough backups at QB. Just can't. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
So true. You never know when your QB's will be offered accounting jobs and rock band contracts. Just send 'da money.
I think it is an absolute waste of a scholarship to add a JC QB when you're Freshman All-American is going to be a Junior-it may be even more of an absolute waste of time to even bother recruiting him because if he has an opportunity to play somewhere else he will 99.5% of the time. Just like recruiting two JC QBs a couple of years ago was questionable but maybe necessary because of poor earlier recruiting. I would like to see us get to a staggered QB recruiting where you get the best one every year you can and develop him. Worked pretty good for Tech as they repeatedly were able to trot out a senior QB each year. That's how it is supposed to be done in a perfect world. Of course, they've had a couple of QBs leave and a QB with a recurring injury that changed that scenario. If Bennett really had confidence in his prize 5-11 QB recruit he should be going young at QB this year. AZs far as I can see Bennett was shutout at QB recruiting again this year with the high school QBs he really wanted. 5 Metroplexs already committed elsewhere.
Got to disagree. I bet Coach February wishes he had a reliable and experienced backup when Colt McCoy got hurt last year. You're right that teams should follow the Spurrier plan and sign a QB every year. In this case, adding a JUCO definitely is not a bad idea. Slater is going to graduate after this year, Rhodes might be a QB and might be a WR (or both) and Logan Turner presumably will be a redshirt freshman. Wouldn't be a bad idea to sign a JUCO and a HS quarterback.
Willis ain't going pro-EVER- so its totally different Junior year comparison. No good QB would follow a Heisman Trophy candidate to UT unless he had some prospects for see the field unless of course he had poor or no options. UT went high school and committed Ryan Perriloux from Louisiana-unfortunately he decommitted in the last weeks of recruiting.
Ya, we played our JUCO QB, Slater, who didn't play all that well. So this guy would have the same amount of experience in that situation, just not sure how much more skilled he is. Count me as one who would rather find a solid highschool QB prospect when you already have a guy who will be your starter for the next 3 seasons. If Willis gets hurt and you have to go with a young stud redhsirt frosh, so be it. Willis seemed to do pretty well once he was given the chance (ie not counting the first two games in which PB and Rusty did not give him that chance).
Given that Slater had about 24 hours to get ready to start the game, everyone I've talked to who was there said he did an exceptional job. He took no extra snaps with the first team that week and we still were in the game in a fairly tough place to play. I prefer HS prospects, too, but let's not badmouth Slater's effort that day.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
HE was woefully inadequate in the first half, and almost magical in the second (vs. UTEP).
Question: why didn't he get to play more to prepare in games we already had won, or games that were out of reach? Perhaps the same reason why we have had a horrible string of QB problems...it ain't all bad luck folks...a lot of it is bad management.
