Peruna Handler Tryouts Held Saturday

...back in my day, it was the responsibility of the ATO's to handle Peruna, and we did it out of pride and loyalty. Now it's a paid postion?!?...my, things have changed over there....long live Bill Demuth.

Wow.. I did it from '92 - '94. Wish we got paid.. but it was a blast and always a good seat.

Unfortunately, two fires which left people dead tend to get you kicked off campus. Add in the refusal to follow campus rules, and whammo. I'm sure the ATO's wish they had not had those fires which called attention to the other issues and which killed two of their own. This is more of an object lesson which all fraternities should be shown every year. Add in the untimely water chugging death of the Omega. Add in the BETA's getting shut down by their national office with SMU's concurrance and hopefully the frats will begin to understand that University has rules for a reason. And when they are not followed bad things happen.

The $600 is scholarship and it definitely helps. When I was a handler, the scholarship money helped pay for gas money. A handler needs to visit Peruna even on non-game weeks. Plus, I think there should be a slightly bigger scholarship. The cheerleaders and the band get scholarships for their time commitments, and the handlers should too.

Can you not just explain to him at the end of the previous game that there will not be a game the next week and he needs to find some kind of entertainment to keep occupied the next weekend. Surely we can teach these horses some self reliance and help them to mature in the equine world.

That sounds good, or maybe a compilation of scenes where a handler falls and Peruna runs wild. That would provide laughs and incentive for Peruna when he runs again.

Too bad there's no tape of Peruna killing the Fordham ram, or trying to mate with Misty, or chasing the Baylor bear, or knocking the wind out of BEVO, or running through the Rice band, or biting a cheerleader's hindquarters and of course leaving a big steaming pile at midfield at TCU. That would be "priceless".

There was some sort of barn dance or Little Abner party held at the house. There was apparently hay all over the floor. Either during or after the party something ignited the hay, and a guy who was sleeping (apparently passed out) upstairs died of smoke inhalation I seem to recall.
